Sydney Sweeney Breaking 7-Year Box Office Record Is Becoming A Reality As R-Rated Thriller Shatters New Milestone

Sydney Sweeney’s new movie is racing to break a major box office record.

In the movie The Housemaid, Sweeney plays the main character, a woman hired as a housekeeper by a rich wife. But their relationship takes a dark turn as secrets are revealed. The film has captivated viewers since its release and has quickly become a commercial success.

Okay, so I just saw that The Housemaid has officially blown past $350 million worldwide – which is huge, especially considering it was released over a slow Super Bowl weekend! Breaking it down, it’s made about $231 million internationally and $123.7 million here in the States, bringing the grand total to $354.7 million. Seriously impressive numbers!

The R-rated thriller is doing very well overseas, earning $14.7 million this weekend. It’s particularly popular in the UK, France, Germany, and Austria. The film is also a huge hit in Brazil, where it’s still number one after six weeks and has seen a significant 17% jump in viewers.

Despite being available to stream at home, The Housemaid continues to do well in theaters, particularly overseas. This international success could help Sydney Sweeney break a record that’s stood for seven years. The film already passed $300 million at the box office last month, making it Sweeney’s highest-grossing film so far, but one final film needs to perform to officially confirm the record.

The young actor appeared in a small part in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which earned over $393 million worldwide. While that’s currently her most successful film, she may soon surpass that record thanks to strong international viewership of her latest work.

Initial estimates last month suggested The Housemaid could earn up to $400 million worldwide. If it reaches that amount, it would become director Sweeney’s highest-grossing film, surpassing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. While the movie is now available to purchase digitally in the US, it hasn’t yet been released on streaming services, meaning it still has a chance to break that seven-year-old record.

After a couple of unsuccessful films in 2025 – Christy, Americana and Eden – director Sweeney is now celebrating the box office hit, The Housemaid. While Eden later gained popularity on streaming services, it’s anticipated that The Housemaid will also find an audience that way, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Before it even came out, The Housemaid received great reviews. Currently, it has a 74% rating from critics and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film features Brandon Sklenar, Amanda Seyfried, and Michele Morrone.

Because the movie was such a big hit, a second film is being planned. It will likely be based on the story from The Housemaid’s Secret. Paul Feig is set to direct again, and stars Sweeney and Morrone will also be back. No details about when filming will start or when the movie will be released have been announced yet.

The Housmaid is still playing in theaters.
