Sydney Sweeney has won praise for her latest performance weeks after a box office bomb.
The actress is now working with Amanda Seyfried on a new project called The Housemaid. This comes after her previous film, Christy, didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $1.3 million during its opening weekend.
The 28-year-old actress is facing increasing criticism after publicly supporting Donald Trump and becoming involved with controversial figures like Scooter Braun. This backlash was further fueled by her recent work in an American Eagle ad campaign that many found problematic.
Despite the ups and downs of her career, the young actress has received a boost thanks to the overwhelmingly positive reviews for her film, The Housemaid.
Based on Freida McFadden’s popular 2022 novel, the movie features Sydney as Millie Calloway, a live-in maid who uncovers troubling secrets about the wealthy family she works for, led by the wife (played by Seyfried).
Paul Feig’s film has been praised by critics as a delightful throwback to the popular female-led thrillers of the 1990s. Sydney also served as an executive producer on the project.

In a four-star review for The Telegraph, Tim Robey praised Sydney, calling her performance ‘extremely watchable, even if it’s a bit of a mess,’ and noted she ‘improves throughout the film with increasing confidence.’
In a review for the Associated Press, Mark Kennedy described the movie as ‘delicious,’ calling it a surprising holiday gift. He praised it as a clever and suspenseful horror-thriller that also carries a message of empowerment, and noted it includes nudity.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following the buzz around ‘Sydney,’ and while the film itself is getting a lot of attention, everyone is raving about Amanda’s performance. Brian Truitt from USA Today perfectly captured it – he called her ‘a force of nature,’ and honestly, I couldn’t agree more! She truly dominates the screen.
In a review for Deadline, Pete Hammond described Amanda Seyfried as wonderfully over-the-top, saying she’s so captivatingly dramatic that you’ll almost want to scold her – but intentionally so, making her performance a delight to watch.
As Variety’s Owen Gleiberman put it, during awards season when everyone focuses on serious, high-brow films, a fun and clever ‘guilty pleasure’ like this one can really stand out.
As a lot of you know, my film, Christy, didn’t get any Golden Globe nominations this year, and it’s been a bit of a topic lately. I’ve been doing a lot of interviews, and I’ve been standing by the work we did. It’s always tough when a project you poured your heart into doesn’t get the recognition you hoped for, but I’m incredibly proud of the film and the message it shares. I’m focusing on the positive and the impact it has had on audiences, and that’s what truly matters to me.
The actress portrayed boxer Christy Martin in a biographical film. While critics liked her acting, the movie wasn’t successful with audiences and didn’t make much money.
Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Sydney wrote: ‘This is the most important film I’ve ever made.’

Christy Martin was a powerful and celebrated boxer for two decades. However, behind closed doors, she endured horrific abuse and a near-fatal attack at the hands of her partner.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen many inspiring journeys, and this one truly stands out. It’s not simply a boxing story; it’s a deeply personal exploration of who we are, how we fight to survive when life knocks us down, and the incredible inner strength it takes to rebuild your life after experiencing profound loss. It’s a testament to the human spirit, really.
Every minute in the U.S., roughly 20 people experience physical abuse from a partner. This is why this story is important, and like the person it focuses on, we are committed to continuing to share it.
Our goal is to share the truth and support those who have experienced trauma. If this film can help just one person feel recognized, validated, or less isolated, we will have achieved something meaningful.
Thanks for watching and for sharing this with others. I hope you continue to think about Christy even after the movie ends – she certainly has stayed with me.

The movie cost $15 million to produce, but it only earned $2 million during its opening weekend, resulting in a substantial financial loss.
The film made $1.3 million in the US and Canada during its first weekend, which was among the 12 lowest opening weekends ever for a new movie released in over 2,000 theaters.
The actress from Euphoria recently discussed a recent American Eagle denim ad featuring her. The ad’s tagline, ‘Sydney Sweeney has Great Jeans,’ sparked some debate, with people suggesting it was a pun on the word ‘genes’ and implied she had superior genetics.
Sydney told People magazine she was genuinely surprised by the public’s response. She explained she simply shared the photo because she loves the jeans and the brand itself.
I disagree with the beliefs of certain individuals who became involved with the campaign. It’s frustrating that people are making assumptions about my motives and mischaracterizing me.
The Housemaid is released in the UK on December 22
