Sword Art Online Variant Showdown is re-releasing after over one year of maintenance

As a dedicated SAO fan who’s been through countless virtual worlds and countless real-life maintenance breaks, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation at the announcement of Sword Art Online Variant Showdown’s re-release. After what feels like an eternity, we’re finally getting back into the game that’s consumed so much of my time (and wallet).

Bandai Namco has revealed plans for the return of their Sword Art Online-themed MMORPG, Sword Art Online Variant Showdown, after a year-long maintenance period. During this time, the game was offline to address all its technical issues, and it was initially projected to resume operation this summer.

For those who may not be familiar, Sword Art Online Variant Showdown is an action-packed MMORPG set within the SAO universe, debuting on November 22, 2022. The game includes real-time PvP battles, main storylines alongside side and extra stories, limited-time quests, avatar customization, team-based fights with up to three characters, ability cards, and various additional features.

Players ran into several in-game glitches because of problems within the game’s fundamental mechanisms, including the Gacha system. There were numerous other issues as well. Consequently, the developers have scheduled an extended downtime, or maintenance break, beginning on September 28, 2023, to rectify the underlying systems and provide a smooth, bug-free gaming experience for fans. This will ensure that the game is polished and free of errors upon its return.

The great news is that developers have now confirmed through X (previously known as Twitter and YouTube) that they will be re-releasing the game, although it was initially planned for this summer. As per the announcement, the game titled “Sword Art Online Variant Showdown” is set to return imminently on both Android and iOS devices.

The developers have initiated a campaign offering Variant Crystals. You can collect these rewards if the announcement garners a combined total of 3,000 reposts and likes on X. This event will continue until December 26, 2024.
