Swerve Strickland’s new AEW contract is what’s best for business

Swerve Strickland's new AEW contract is what's best for business

As a long-time fan who’s witnessed the evolution of professional wrestling, I can confidently say that the current landscape is more exciting than ever before. The recent discussions about Swerve Strickland’s contract and WWE’s perceived viewpoint on the matter are just another chapter in this ongoing saga.

Occasionally, discussions arise within the online wrestling community about intriguing topics. Recently, Dave Meltzer sparked conversation on Friday regarding Swerve Strickland’s latest contract and WWE’s alleged views on the subject. Although this is one perspective to approach the conversation, a report from Fightful Select later in the day highlighted why these types of deals are now crucial in professional wrestling and entertainment industries.

Based on Meltzer’s report, WWE views AEW’s contract as potentially harmful for their business, considering it exceeds what they consider the market value significantly. This assertion follows news about Strickland’s contract, which is said to be among the highest in AEW and comparable to those of Kazuchika Okada and Mercedes Mone.

That’s an interesting stance for WWE to take. It’s one that makes sense for a promotion to take as well. Why? Because it’s in the WWE, and Endeavor’s, best interest to keep costs down. If performer pay is low, that benefits revenue, and a benefit of revenue helps the shareholders who are the main interested party. Endeavor, and WWE by offshoot, are beholden to those individuals. There’s zero interest in any employer truly paying talent their worth and WWE’s thoughts on another individual’s contract should be ignored.

Fightful’s report delves deeper into the critical aspects of the discussion. As per Fightful, the contract scenario has been generally favorable, with backing from individuals we’ve talked to at all significant companies and independents alike. This crucial point is noteworthy because talent recognizes their worth and can start negotiating for it, choosing where they are compensated most appropriately.

“According to a source from the Fightful Select report, even if it’s not something I’ve personally heard, it’s absurd to believe that wrestlers would accept lower pay when new TV deals are being discussed and they’re boasting about sold-out shows and record attendance numbers.”

As a passionate wrestling fan, I can’t help but notice the phenomenal success of WWE, consistently breaking records with sellout episodes of SmackDown and Raw almost every week. Not to mention their Pay-Per-Views that keep setting new records. Now, All Elite Wrestling is reportedly negotiating a new rights deal, which insiders say could significantly surpass their previous contract.

Once more, this instance underscores the advantages of competition in business. It’s worth noting that Endeavor, which takes great pride in eliminating competitors, has shown its impact through its ownership of the UFC and the subsequent decline in competition within that industry. This is a situation we should strive to prevent from recurring in professional wrestling, as both fans and performers stand to benefit when the market isn’t dominated by a single entity like the WWE. Here’s hoping for more diversity in contracts offered across the industry, even if some might initially be seen as detrimental to business, since it ultimately fosters a healthier and more vibrant wrestling scene.
