Swerve Strickland's journey to becoming one of the top wrestlers today

As a seasoned gamer and wrestling enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional stories, I find Swerve Strickland’s journey to be nothing short of captivating. Having served in the US Army at such a young age and juggling that duty with his passion for professional wrestling, he embodies the spirit of resilience and determination that makes sports entertainment so compelling.

Prior to embarking on his professional wrestling career with AEW, Swerve Strickland chose to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve. This decision came shortly after leaving Donegal High School at 17 years old. Inspired by his father’s military service, Strickland felt this was a crucial step for him. He shares that these years were a source of comfort and played a significant role in shaping the person he has become today. In addition, on the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast, Strickland discussed how the skills and experiences gained during his military service have also been beneficial in his wrestling career.

Man, things aren’t going the right way. There’s a way to figure this out. I’m gonna figure it out. And I’ve always kept that mindset through everything. It’s not easy, but this is a challenge. With challenges it takes time.

During his military service, he started honing his skills as a professional wrestler at Ground Zero Wrestling Training Academy. Initially, he would compete in wrestling matches mainly near his Army base in Pennsylvania. Later, he progressed through the Independent circuit. His career had quite a lengthy path that included stints with Lucha Underground, Major League Wrestling, and other promotions before joining WWE in 2019.

As the NXT North American Champion, I’d already made a name for myself in the wrestling underground. But when it came to the company, I found it tough to make significant headway. Being one of Paul “Triple H” Levesque’s guys seemed like an elusive goal during my time in NXT. In interviews on The No-Contest Podcast, I shared that it was around this period where I conceived a fresh character and persona, modeled after Wesley Snipes from the movie Demolition Man.

I approached Trips (Triple H) and kept asking him what do I have to do to be one of your guys. You can tell who the guys are. They’re the ones that get extra or multiple segments, getting the bigger matches. You can tell the pageantry is going up for some people. You can tell who is really getting the rocket. You’ve hired me because I did that and now you’re saying I can’t do it. I had those conversations three or so different times.

At that moment, he underwent a transformation in his character, and it was William Regal who first recognized the change. Strickland began embodying elements from the Snipes character, Simon Phoenix, from Demolition Man. This is when he conceived an exceptional idea for a character that WWE hadn’t fully exploited, but AEW has since utilized effectively.

That’s where I got into a pocket that they (WWE) couldn’t control. They didn’t know how to. They couldn’t maneuver it. They couldn’t put their strings on it, but it’s not their creation — it’s mine. And that’s where I came in through the back door with Hit Row. I knew this would work and I had to be confident in the fact that I know what I’m doing and you can only get this from me and my mind.

Strickland on character change in NXT

2021 marked the start of Strickland’s departure from WWE, following his loss of the NXT North American Championship to Carmelo Hayes after a 100-day reign. Coincidentally, he was let go together with other faction members about a month later. Interestingly, this turn of events seems to have been a fortunate twist for Strickland, as he has since become one of the most prominent figures in professional wrestling today.

In WWE, his character transformation merely hinted at his prior accomplishments in AEW. Today, this former AEW Champion stands out as one of the most unconventional personas in modern professional wrestling. Surprisingly, Strickland attributes the incorporation of horror elements into his act as a means to make it even more intriguing.

Horror has always been an underlying tone in my character. Which you wouldn’t think about with most black wrestlers. We’re all very flashy, we’re charismatic, we’re athletic. I’m like, yeah, we’re all those things, but what’s that in addition to? For me, I’m not a horror character, but I have horror elements about my character that I bring into play like a Candyman. So I was like how do I take a Wesley Snipes Demolition Man Simon Phoenix in the ring and add a little horror to that.

Strickland on adding horror to act

In a historic and passionate feud that has gone down as one of AEW’s greatest, Strickland emerged victorious against “Hangman” Adam Page. He defeated him twice, even after suffering the loss of his home. This intense and deeply personal rivalry is among the most memorable in wrestling today. Despite all he’s faced, Strickland has shown incredible determination to reach where he is now, accomplishing so much along the way. As the first black AEW World Champion, he also ranks among the highest-paid wrestlers worldwide. The best part? He’s just getting started.
