Swerve Strickland was a masterful AEW World Champion

As a lifelong wrestling enthusiast who has witnessed countless title changes and championship reigns, I must say that Swerve Strickland’s run as AEW World Champion was nothing short of phenomenal. Being there at Wembley Stadium for All In was an unforgettable experience, and seeing Strickland hoist the coveted title was a defining moment in wrestling history.

Bryan Danielson exited AEW All In with the World Championship on his back, marking the pinnacle of his career that he had long strived for. However, this achievement was inescapable as his wrestling days came to a close. Facing him was Swerve Strickland, who held the title firmly. From the beginning, Strickland proved himself to be an exceptional champion and he maintained this excellence until his reign ended at Wembley Stadium. It is indisputable that he was a skilled and dominant champion throughout his tenure.

Supporters were eager for AEW to crown its first Black male champion as the main figurehead. After five years, there was a growing sentiment that it was long overdue, and if Tony Khan waited any longer, the criticism would only intensify. AEW made a wise decision by bestowing the championship on Strickland, as he has taken numerous strides to enhance the title in various aspects, not just within the ring.

Initially, Strickland’s actions during his title reign were flawless, balancing perfectly between a detested villain and an admired champion. Particularly against “Hangman” Adam Page, he skillfully walked the tightrope between beloved titlist and cunning manipulator. In essence, he was a fierce competitor who wouldn’t hesitate to do or say whatever it took to stay at the top. Despite the fans’ adoration for him, Strickland managed to make his main rivals more popular. This process only heightened the significance of the championship, reinforcing the belief that “the man defines the title.”

During this championship run, Strickland showcased his exceptional skills within the ring. While he was already recognized as a technical prodigy, he managed to elevate his game in ways that surprised many. One night, he’d demonstrate an overwhelming brutality during matches. The following night, his moves would be executed with such precision and impact that they seemed even more violent. Strickland aimed to prove that he is among the top performers from bell to bell in wrestling today, and he succeeded in doing so.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Tony Khan’s initial plan for Swerve Strickland’s title run didn’t quite resonate with fans at first. But the man knows his stuff, and he made some tweaks along the way. Those adjustments transformed what could have been into an exceptional championship journey for Strickland. And guess what? This is just the beginning. AEW All In announced that Strickland has signed a new deal, cementing his status in that company. One of these days, that title belt will be his, but even without it, he’s already left an indelible mark among the greats.
