SWAT Just Did WHAT?! You Won’t Believe Who’s Gone!

As the finale of the S.W.A.T. series approaches, viewers are eagerly anticipating how various storylines will wrap up. It seems that the eighth season’s eighteenth episode has concluded the arc for Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit), a character who has been at odds with Deputy Chief Bennett (Merrin Dungey) throughout the season. It appears that Bennett has come out on top, leading to Hicks losing a job he cherishes. This development, however, is disappointing to fans of the show.

Given his long-standing role as one of the original four main cast members on S.W.A.T., it seems fitting that Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Shemar Moore) deserves a more satisfying conclusion to his storyline. It’s evident that both Hondo and the 20-Squad team are dissatisfied with their superior officer’s handling, yet he shows no inclination towards assuming command. If the writers truly wish to depict Hicks leaving the force, it would be more appropriate to do so in the series finale of S.W.A.T., allowing for a proper farewell and retirement.

Hicks Resigns In SWAT Season 8, Episode 18 Explained

Bennett Forces Hicks To Leave S.W.A.T.

In the 18th episode of S.W.A.T.’s eighth season, Hondo found out from Deacon about a list of potential new team leaders. This news made him concerned about Hicks’ future on the team, so he decided to inform his superior about it. However, Hicks didn’t seem too concerned as he believed he had backing from those in command, even having recently golfed with the Chief.

At the conclusion of the episode, Hicks received a setback when he discovered he’d be in charge of a task force tackling art theft. As Hicks himself acknowledged, this would be an excellent opportunity for a rising star in the ranks, not for a seasoned veteran like him. When Deputy Chief Bennett unequivocally stated that he had no choice but to be reassigned, with even the Chief giving his approval, Hicks opted to resign, preferring to make his own decision rather than being shuffled into obscurity for the remainder of his career. The expression on Bennett’s face suggested she was pleased with his response.

Why Losing Hicks Ahead of SWAT’s Finale Is So Disappointing

S.W.A.T. Is Cheated Out Of a Celebration Of Hicks’ Career

It was clear that there was a possibility that Hicks might not be part of the series as it concluded. Given his advancing age, he has contemplated retirement before. However, being an original team member, it seems fitting for him to stay with the show until its final chapter, considering season 9 of S.W.A.T. isn’t being produced. Hicks has consistently demonstrated a strong sense of camaraderie, so it’s hard to comprehend why the Chief would overlook this and listen to Bennett instead.

The final episode could have offered an enchanting farewell message about retirement and handing over responsibilities, providing Hicks with a dignified exit and backing. However, it’s implausible for Hondo to ascend from Sergeant to Commander; instead, he would acknowledge the arrival of a new leader as Hicks departs on his own accord, accompanied by a joyful send-off in the series finale. At least by resigning, Hicks retains his pension and the team’s admiration, but it seems the S.W.A.T. writers are denying us the opportunity to honor Hicks’ distinguished career with a fitting goodbye.
