Suzanne Somers’ widower breaks silence on new romance with late wife’s former costar 2 years after her death

Suzanne Somers‘ late husband, Alan Hamel, has openly admitted that he is now in a relationship with one of her former co-stars, just shy of two years since her passing.

On a Monday outing, the 88-year-old entertainer was seen walking hand-in-hand with Joanna Cassidy, aged 79, who co-starred with him in the 1985 miniseries “Hollywood Wives,” in Malibu.

‘I don’t know where this relationship is going,’ he told Page Six of the new romance.

And he told the outlet he’s known Cassidy for more than four decades.

Joanna appeared as a special guest on ‘The Alan Hamel Show’, a popular daytime talk show in Canada during the 1970s. She was an excellent guest and the show was lively, with both of us developing a mutual respect for each other. It’s important to note that we were both married at the time, and our connection was not romantic but based on mutual admiration. This is how Hamel remembered the occasion.

Somers died on October 15, 2023 at the age of 76 after a battle with cancer.

Alan went on to explain that he and Joanna met again while she filmed Hollywood Wives with Suzanne.

Back in the mid-80s, I frequently encountered her while working on Jackie Collins’ Hollywood Wives series. Our interactions were always pleasant and friendly, the TV host noted.

He credits his son Stephen Hamel with bringing them together this time around.

My child encountered Joanna at a movie event, and following an extended discussion, he proposed to Joanna that we three might be compatible and suggested a meeting, as it turned out, unbeknownst to him, they were already acquainted. He made this clear later on.

In her last days, Suzanne, Alan’s wife who had passed away, inspired him by urging him to continue living his life.

He shared that she had advised him, “Cheer up! Carry on with your life. I’ll meet you again when you reach the other side.

The Canadian producer praised his current collaborator, stating that she is remarkably successful and undeniably one of the busiest and most active actresses in Hollywood for more than half a century.

He enthusiastically praised her, saying, “She’s an exceptional mother to her grown-up kids, regularly supports charity events for emergency responders, and takes care of her four cats diligently. She’s not at all fake like in Hollywood, and we share many laughs together.

He went on to say, ‘I consider myself lucky to have Joanna in my world. Many men would be thrilled to have someone like Joanna in their lives.’

Reflecting on things from a broader standpoint, he mentioned that he wasn’t sure about the future of this relationship. However, what he was certain of was his fortunate situation in the twilight of his life. This good fortune, he acknowledged gratefully, was largely due to Suzanne – an exceptional woman who had been instrumental in shaping the business they started half a century ago.

Hamel spoke with Daily Mail last October to mark the one-year anniversary of Somers’ death.

He expressed that the word “missing” may not fully capture it, as for over five decades they hadn’t spent a single hour separated from each other. It’s deeply saddening for him.

He remarked, ‘Suzanne and I had such a strong bond that, when I was out of the room, she’d feel my absence, and I’d feel hers, too – despite us living under the same roof.’

‘We would actually go to sleep holding each other’s hands which was so special to me.’
