Susan Sarandon shares reason she never changed her name after divorcing Chris Sarandon in 1979

As a dedicated follower of Susan Sarandon‘s remarkable journey through life and art, I am constantly captivated by her unique blend of strength, grace, and vulnerability. Her story is one that transcends the silver screen and delves deep into the complexities of human relationships.

Forty-five years after their divorce in 1979, Susan Sarandon continues to use her ex-husband Chris Sarandon’s last name.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but delve into the fascinating journey of this illustrious actress, whose life story has always left me spellbound. Initially, she declared that marriage to Chris was never on her horizon. Yet, here we are, dissecting why she chose to retain his surname and speculating about the alternative moniker she might have opted for if given a second chance.

In a conversation with The Times, Susan (age 78) expressed gratitude for being alive, attributing it to the kindness of a certain man. Now, she feels content and proud to bear that name while publicizing her latest project, ‘The Gutter’.

In the mid-60s, a pair of individuals who didn’t have kids together but maintained friendship over the decades initially crossed paths at The Catholic University of America, located in Washington, D.C., during their college years.

She, a university student, lived economically by residing with her grandparents to cut costs and worked at the switchboard within the drama department, where Chris was a postgraduate student.

Last year, on an episode of his podcast Cooking by Heart, Susan expressed, ‘When I first encountered Chris, it appeared to me, quite accurately, that he was omniscient due to his knowledge of black-and-white films and literature. He even went as far as saving my life through his kindness.’

During the podcast, Susan expressed her gratitude by saying, “In truth, it’s largely due to you that I have a foundation and have survived. One of my main purposes for being here today is to openly acknowledge this.” She shared these sentiments with Chris, who was 82 years old.

Susan has the surname Tomalin at birth, and looking back, she wouldn’t opt to alter it from Sarandon instead.

But she would change her first name.

Sigourney Weaver, Tuesday Weld, and Stockard Channing initially went by the name ‘Susan’, but they wisely decided to change it. Unfortunately, I’m still saddled with being called Susan,” she shared with The Times.

‘It’s kind of nice to do a rechristening as you start to realize who you are.’

Although Thelma and Louise actress Thelma didn’t have children during her marriage with Chris, and was informed she couldn’t conceive, she unexpectedly discovered herself pregnant at the age of 39 while dating Italian filmmaker Franco Amurri.

Eva Amurri, their daughter, currently stands at 39 years old and is an actress as well. Additionally, Sarandon had two sons with her long-term partner, Tim Robbins. Jack Henry Robbins is 35 while Miles Robbins is 32. Both have established careers in the movie industry.

In 1987, Susan and Tim first crossed paths on the filming location of ‘Field of Dreams’. Despite not formalizing their union through marriage, they remained a couple from that time up until 2009.

And though The Hunger star has dated a who’s who of famous men, including David Bowie, she has vowed to never write a memoir.

When asked about dating now, she called herself ‘unattached’ and evoked a line from a Beatles song.

In simpler terms, the phrase “The love you take is equal to the love you make” suggests that the amount of love one experiences in life is proportional to the amount of love one gives. It’s challenging nowadays, with all the negativity, selfishness, and greed we encounter, to maintain a space filled with love and hope that others can discover once things calm down.
