Susan Sarandon says she’s been effectively shut out of Hollywood because of her support for Palestinians, following the recent conflict in Gaza. She believes her views have led to her being blacklisted.
The 79-year-old actress announced Friday, during a press conference in Barcelona, Spain, that she was dropped by her talent agency after publicly calling for a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. She had previously expressed doubts about working in the U.S. again.
According to a video of a press conference held the day before the Goya Awards in Barcelona, she stated she was fired by her agency because she participated in marches and publicly called for a ceasefire in Gaza, which subsequently made it impossible for her to appear on television.
She added that recently, she hasn’t been able to work on any large-scale movies or projects related to Hollywood.
Sarandon claims the alleged Hollywood blacklist she experienced was so severe that filmmakers from other countries were reportedly advised against hiring her.
You know, it’s funny – I recently worked with an Italian director who actually had to go against advice to cast me. Apparently, someone told him not to hire me, but thankfully he saw something he liked and went with his gut! It just goes to show you, sometimes you have to trust your own instincts, even when others are discouraging you.
The pressure to not hire her allegedly limited her to working outside of the major studios.
Sarandon explained that she currently focuses on very low-budget films, often working with first-time directors and independent productions, particularly those based in Europe or Italy. This specialized focus, she says, is the primary reason for her recent reduced workload.
She was thankful for the warm welcome she experienced in Spain, and she acknowledged a colleague who had also been blacklisted.
Sarandon explained that seeing Spain and its president speak out in support of Gaza, especially with prominent figures like Javier Bardem adding their voices, is particularly meaningful for those in the United States who feel stifled by censorship and repression.
She explained that seeing the strong stance and moral clarity in Spain on these issues offered a sense of hope and solidarity, making her feel less isolated. She noted this perspective is rarely shared on American television.
I was chatting with Susan Sarandon recently, and she shared something really vulnerable. She told me about how she lost her agent back in November 2024 and honestly worried if she’d ever work in Hollywood again. It just goes to show, even the most established stars face those kinds of fears!
She lost her Hollywood agent, United Talent Agency, the previous year because of statements she made. The agency is headed by CEO Jeremy Zimmer.
The actress known for The Rocky Horror Picture Show sparked outrage after stating that Jewish people were experiencing similar feelings to those felt by Muslims, during a New York City rally connected to the conflict with Hamas.
In a late 2024 interview with The Times of London, Susan Sarandon discussed how the recent backlash caused her to lose her agent and resulted in her being unable to secure roles in major studio movies.
She explained that her agency terminated their relationship with her and canceled her ongoing projects. She felt she was being held up as a cautionary tale within the industry – an example of how not to behave if someone wants to maintain their career.
Since November of last year, a lot of people have lost their jobs. This includes workers in various fields like cleaning, writing, art, and school food service, as well as substitute teachers who were let go due to their social media activity – whether it was posting a tweet, liking someone else’s post, or calling for a ceasefire.
When asked about the possibility of landing another major movie role, she said she wasn’t sure, and definitely didn’t expect it to be in Hollywood.
In July 2024, Sarandon issued an apology for comments she made, admitting her wording had been a significant error while speaking with Elle Spain.
She repeated her call to stop the violence in Gaza, explaining that she has always been driven to fight against unfairness and oppression.
The actress, featured on the magazine cover, described her celebrity as a platform for raising awareness about important social issues.
Look, I’ve always believed in speaking my truth, and I know that sometimes comes at a cost – in this case, it might mean facing backlash within my industry. But honestly, it’s a price I’m willing to pay. What’s truly important to me is that we all find a way to come together and stop the tragic loss of life between Israelis and Palestinians. No one, absolutely no one, deserves to die like that. It’s a human issue, and we need to prioritize peace and understanding.
Oh my gosh, you wouldn’t BELIEVE how deeply she feels about fairness! She always says it just kills her to see anyone treated badly. Growing up in Washington in the sixties shaped her so much – she always talks about how the Vietnam War was this constant, dark cloud, and then all those awful assassinations – Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr… it just completely marked a generation, you know? She says it really affected how she sees the world.
‘I didn’t have to force myself to educate myself in this sense, it was the only plausible option.
Honestly, it just blows my mind! We have everything at our fingertips now – the internet, instant access to information – and yet, there’s so much stuff out there that’s just…wrong. It’s incredibly frustrating, especially when you’re as into this as I am and you just want the truth!
We all have a responsibility to end the violence in Gaza and ensure both Israelis and Palestinians are safe. No one should have to suffer and die like this.
It’s difficult to realize we all contribute to the problem, but conflicts like this are funded by our tax dollars – your money and mine.
That’s why it’s commendable when countries such as Spain, Ireland, and Norway speak out and declare they don’t want to be part of it.
Susan Sarandon remembers realizing in the 1970s, when the Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in the United States, that her career gave her a platform to be heard.
During one of the marches, Marlo Thomas pointed out to me that the only way to get media attention was for me to start speaking. I was terrified, but I did it anyway, because that’s how I believe we should live – by taking a stand.
Susan Sarandon has a history of activism, having protested issues like AIDS awareness, the Iraq War, and gun violence – and has even been arrested for her involvement.
In June 2018, she was arrested while protesting Donald Trump’s policy of separating children from their parents at a Women Disobey demonstration. The policy was widely criticized.
Her most recent arrest occurred last year during a demonstration advocating for a higher minimum wage for servers and other tipped restaurant employees.
She was surprised that Americans often assume people wanting to come to her country are simply desperate, when in reality, they’re seeking a better life – one that’s stable, respectful, and free.
The actress known for The Rocky Horror Picture Show sparked outrage last November when she suggested Jewish people were experiencing similar treatment to Muslims, referencing the conflict involving Hamas, during a New York City rally.
She apologized for what she said, explaining she hadn’t originally planned to speak at the rally. She was asked to address the crowd and had hoped to draw attention to the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Sarandon admitted her comments overlooked the long history of persecution and mass killings in Europe, and failed to recognize more recent acts of violence, like the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue.
In a recent Instagram post, she explained she was trying to express her worry about the increase in hate crimes. She stated that Jewish Americans, who are increasingly the targets of antisemitism, were experiencing something similar to the discrimination and violence Muslims often face in this country.
That way of wording things was a serious error because it suggests Jews haven’t faced persecution for a long time, which is completely inaccurate. They have a long history of being persecuted.
Throughout history, Jewish people have faced persistent discrimination and violence, from centuries of persecution in Europe to recent events like the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. This pattern of prejudice continues today.
I sincerely apologize for downplaying the situation and causing pain with my previous statement. I meant to express support in the fight against all forms of prejudice, and I’m truly sorry that I didn’t come across that way.
I remain dedicated to fostering peace, honesty, fairness, and kindness towards everyone. I hope we can come together with open hearts and a willingness to talk, particularly with those who hold different views.
Susan Sarandon continues to support Palestinian rights and showed her solidarity by wearing a pro-Palestinian pin at the New York premiere of her latest movie, The Fabulous Four, on Thursday.
Last April, she participated in a Cinema for Gaza auction alongside many famous actors and directors—including Paul Mescal, Olivia Colman, Ayo Edebiri, Tessa Thompson, Louis Theroux, Jonathan Glazer, and Stellan Skarsgård—to collect donations for humanitarian aid in Palestine.
