As a passionate cinephile, I must admit that among the myriad captivating side characters on “Supernatural,” none left a deeper impact than one who was initially slated for just three episodes. The Winchester brothers and Bobby Singer are undeniably the show’s cornerstones, but the creators consistently introduced compelling allies and adversaries to join their supernatural crusade. From Mark Sheppard’s enigmatic Crowley to Felicia Day’s indelible portrayal of Charlie Bradbury, the brothers were aided by the most unexpected sources. However, not every character was destined for such longevity.

In the realm of television critique, I found myself captivated by a pivotal addition to the cast of Supernatural during its fourth season, which premiered on September 18, 2008. This enigmatic figure was none other than Misha Collins, who breathed life into Castiel, the initially terrifying angel who gradually won over viewers’ hearts until the series drew to a close.

As far as relationships within Supernatural go, the endearing bond between Castiel and Dean was undeniably one of the most compelling. This friendship, with its intriguing lean towards romance, kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the show. Misha Collins here, and I’m happy to confirm that Eric Kripke gradually introduced my character, Castiel, into the series. It wasn’t an instant leap from guest star to series regular; instead, I was initially offered three episodes. Fortunately, those first three went well, leading to me being given another six episodes. Later on, I found myself in another three episodes as well. Given the immense popularity of Castiel, this progression seems fitting.

Despite having a less than ideal farewell with the Crowley actor on Supernatural, Misha Collins managed to keep a positive rapport with the series until its conclusion. Initially offered six episodes, his contract was subsequently expanded to 10 and eventually reached 12. In the end, Collins’ character lasted throughout the show’s final season. His last on-screen appearance occurred in “Despair,” episode 18 of season 15. To quote Collins himself, “Supernatural and I had a long courtship before we ended up together.”

Consequently, Castiel entered at a crucial point to become a pivotal element in what eventually shaped up as the main story arc of the show according to its official lore.

To put it another way, Supernatural delved into the deeply personal realms of heaven and hell. By challenging established notions about camaraderie, kinship, and affection, it dared to suggest that even in a world where demons could be allies, and angels cold-blooded killers, one could find acceptance, regardless of one’s true identity.

Among all characters in “Supernatural,” Castiel might have been the one that stood out the most. His heartfelt confession of love towards Dean caused quite a stir, which could be why it was such compelling television. Each viewer interpreted him differently, shaping their own understanding of what love is. Although many felt it was wrong to kill off Castiel, his departure left a lasting impact and even opened up the possibility for a return. Regardless, having Castiel as a series regular played a significant role in the success of “Supernatural,” and it’s great that actor Misha Collins’ contract was extended.
