Despite ending after 15 seasons in 2020, fans are still hoping for a 16th season of Supernatural. While the series finale was somewhat divisive, many viewers aren’t ready to say goodbye to Sam and Dean Winchester and would love to see more of their story.

Supernatural Season 16 Is Not Happening (Yet)

As a huge Supernatural fan, I have to admit the ending makes a reboot tricky. It really felt like Sam and Dean’s story was finished. Dean finally found peace in Heaven, and we saw Sam live a full life and eventually join him. It was a definitive conclusion, showing us exactly what happened to both of them, which makes bringing them back feel… complicated, to say the least.

Changing the ending established in the final season would be tricky and could even feel like a disservice to the show. However, there are ways to revisit the story without completely undoing it, and many fans might actually prefer a different resolution than the one they got in season 15.

Misha Collins, who played Castiel on Supernatural, discussed the possibility of returning to the show with Ebaster, along with other cast members sharing their opinions. He also talked about his idea for how Supernatural could be revived.

We have to find a way to fix things. We’ve already broken so many storytelling rules with time travel and alternate dimensions in Supernatural, so there must be a solution. It’s strange seeing Sam as an old man, and that makes restarting the story difficult. I’m not sure how we fix it, but time travel could be the answer. We could go back to just before Cas sacrificed himself, and then Sam, Dean, and Cas would all still be alive.

There are many possibilities for how Supernatural could continue, but this idea is particularly strong. It directly addresses two of the most debated moments in the show’s history: Dean’s unexpected death caused by a vampire, and Castiel’s fate with the Empty. Collins’ proposal offers a way to revisit and potentially resolve both of these storylines.

Where A Supernatural Reboot Would Take Place In The Timeline

As a big fan of Supernatural, I’ve always appreciated how the show wasn’t afraid to mess with time. We saw Sam and Dean travel back and forth quite a bit, and then they even created The Winchesters to really dive into the past. While The Winchesters didn’t last long, it was cool to finally get a closer look at how John and Mary Winchester first met and started their journey.

The show Supernatural could revisit a point in its history before the final season, though that would mean addressing the fact that the actors have aged. Alternatively, a continuation could take place after the show’s ending, maybe with Dean making a temporary return to Earth to assist Sam with a new challenge.

However, the final storyline is even more troubling, as it implied Sam and Dean never reunited and that Sam ultimately left hunting to start a family – something he always desired. Considering this, Misha Collins’ idea for continuing the story seems like the most fitting solution.

Changing the story to undo Dean’s death would be a retcon, but most fans would likely appreciate it. Many are still disappointed with how Dean died, or even that he died at all. Rewinding to a point before Cas was taken by the Empty could give the show a fresh start and the chance to create a more satisfying conclusion down the line.

Which Characters Should Return For Supernatural Season 16

However a potential Supernatural reboot is structured – whether it revisits old storylines or creates a new one – it absolutely needs Jensen Ackles as Dean and Jared Padalecki as Sam. The franchise has repeatedly shown that stories without them just don’t resonate with fans.

Several attempts to create spin-off shows based on Supernatural failed to gain lasting popularity. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, as Sam and Dean Winchester, are truly the heart of the show’s success, making their involvement crucial for any potential revival. That said, bringing back other beloved characters would also be great.

Castiel is just as popular as the Winchester brothers, so bringing him back would be crucial. Fan favorites like Bobby, Jody, and even Chuck should also return, and ideally, the show should include as many familiar faces as possible.

Currently, we’re still waiting for news about a potential season 16 of Supernatural. But with all the recent discussions and hints, it seems likely the show will return eventually, much to the delight of its fans.
