Supernatural Prequel Should Focus on Bobby Singer Instead of the Winchesters

Instead of focusing on the supernatural series “Supernatural”‘s prequel, “The Winchesters,” as a story about Sam and Dean’s family, perhaps it could have resonated more with audiences if it centered around a cherished supporting character instead. Unfortunately, numerous factors contributed to the downfall of “The Winchesters,” the spinoff of “Supernatural.” From inconsistencies in the original show’s mythology to quality concerns, the prequel faced numerous hurdles in gaining fan support. Ultimately, however, the main characters John and Mary Winchester lacked the allure needed to captivate viewers.

The relationship between Sam and Dean was crucial to the initial series, so introducing new main characters was bound to be challenging. However, there’s undeniably continued interest in the CW’s Supernatural series, as evidenced by talks about season 16. A spinoff could potentially work well, provided it offers a more compelling concept than The Winchesters. Moreover, one captivating side character from Supernatural could have made an excellent prequel lead, considering the intriguing glimpses into his past we see in the original storyline.

Supernatural’s Prequel Should Have Been About Bobby Singer, Not The Winchester Family

Viewers Were Already Attached To Bobby’s Character

In simpler terms, “Bobby Singer is arguably one of the most compelling characters from ‘Supernatural.’ I believe he would have been a better choice for the lead in a prequel than Mary and John Winchester. Firstly, we already know quite a bit about the Winchesters’ parents through the original series, making their story seem less necessary to delve deeper into. Although the twist that Mary’s family, not John’s, were hunters was intriguing, its portrayal in the backstory fell short. In contrast, Bobby’s history, hinted at in the main show, presents more interesting possibilities.

Bobby’s pre-Supernatural struggles were deeply emotional, making them an effective starting point for a prequel. Fans were already fond of Bobby from the original series, which would have made them more likely to invest in a spinoff. The relationship between Bobby and Rufus Turner could have mirrored the brotherhood theme in the main show, offering a familiar feel that longtime fans would appreciate.

Bobby’s Backstory Is Alluded To In The Original Series & Deserves More Depth

A Supernatural Prequel Could Offer A More Detailed Character Study

Bobby’s past could have provided an excellent foundation for a Supernatural spin-off, starting with a traumatic event similar to those in the original series. In the series, we learn that Bobby became a hunter following the tragic possession of his wife by a demon, which led him to take her life. This backstory significantly impacts Bobby’s character throughout the show, and exploring it further in a prequel could provide a richer examination of his grief.

This scenario would illustrate how he turned into such an accomplished hunter, eventually guiding Sam and Dean. Since Bobby is so adored, it would be entertaining to observe his transformation from a novice to a seasoned pro in the “trade.” Additionally, this setup could provide more focus on Rufus, and a spinoff featuring Bobby wouldn’t exclude appearances by the Winchester family.

A Bobby Singer Prequel Could Still Have Included Winchester Cameos

But It Wouldn’t Have Been Too Close To The Original Show

The connection between the Winchesters and the original series was somewhat tight, but a spinoff focusing on Bobby Singer could have included cameos of the Winchester family without directly repeating or feeling repetitive. Since Bobby and John Winchester were acquainted before the start of Supernatural, viewers would still have had an opportunity to see John in his younger years. Additionally, we could have been treated to scenes featuring young Sam and Dean, which would have added more depth to their bond with Bobby within the series.

As a devoted fan of Supernatural, I can’t help but ponder: if the CW were to expand the Supernatural universe, they should seriously consider Bobby as a potential protagonist for his own series. It’s tough to imagine anyone other than Jim Beaver embodying that role so flawlessly, but with the right touch, his character could carry a show brilliantly.
