Superman’s James Gunn on Why Supergirl Didn’t Tell Kal-El About Jor-El’s Message

James Gunn recently explained why Supergirl didn’t reveal the truth about Kal-El’s parents’ message to him in Superman. This film, starring Milly Alcock as Kara (Supergirl), was released worldwide on July 11, 2025. The movie not only received rave reviews but also set up her standalone movie within the DCU. Superman, directed by Gunn, is currently a box office smash with earnings surpassing $400 million.

James Gunn says Supergirl ‘wouldn’t know anything’ about Superman’s parents

After the successful premiere of Superman, its director is now addressing some fan queries about the movie’s storyline.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, James Gunn explained why Milly Alcock’s character Kara Zor-El (also known as Supergirl) didn’t inform her cousin Superman about the true meaning of his parents’ message in the rebooted DC Universe. Unlike in most comics where Supergirl is typically older than Superman, Gunn revealed that this dynamic has been flipped in the new universe.

The DC Studios co-CEO clarified the reason Kara didn’t disclose Jor-El’s true intentions to Superman. He stated, “One might presume everyone on Krypton is identical! But how could she be certain? She’s younger than him, so she wouldn’t have been privy to his family matters.

James Gunn was also questioned if Kara had a more prominent role in the movie prior to its final release. He replied, “Indeed, that was always the plan. When I accepted this position, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was one of my top priorities. Ana Nogueira instantly excelled at the script, and she recognized the potential for the comic to be transformed into a film, where [Supergirl] is even tougher in the movie than in the comic, I believe.

At this moment, the movie “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is being worked on and should be released in cinemas on June 26, 2026.
