Superman’s James Gunn on if Jor-El’s Message Was Fake
In his latest Superman film, James Gunn recently unveiled the truth behind Jor-El’s message sent to Kal-El. This highly anticipated DCU production, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, premiered in theaters on July 11, 2025, and has since garnered both critical acclaim and substantial box office success. As of now, the movie has earned over $400 million worldwide.
James Gunn confirms Jor-El’s message to Superman was not doctored
In a recent chat with Josh Horowitz on his Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, filmmaker James Gunn was questioned about the possible alteration of Jor-El’s message in the Superman movie.
It turns out that Superman has a recording from his parents, Jor-El (played by Bradley Cooper) and Lara (Angela Sarafyan), which he thought contained instructions for him to aid the people of Earth. However, a crucial part of the message was damaged, and it was the Engineer who later retrieved the missing information. In this recovered section, Superman’s birth parents actually urge him to rule over humanity instead. Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) eventually disseminates this restored message to the public in an attempt to sway opinion against Superman.
When conversing with Horowitz, Gunn made clear his astonishment at the belief that the message had been altered by Luthor.
In the movie, Mr. Terrific confidently states, “I’m familiar with those computer forensics experts. There’s no way.” This is Mr. Terrific, just as smart as Lex Luthor. Later, my Secretary of Defense remarks, “Regardless of your opinions about Luthor, it’s genuine.” To add to this, Gurkos and Lex are seen together, and Gurkos comments, “This is fantastic manipulation,” to which Lex replies, “It’s not a manipulated message.” Instead, “It’s the real thing.
In earlier discussions, Gunn shared his modifications to Superman’s backstory, expressing, “Being a die-hard Superman fan, I felt it was crucial to maintain the essential aspects of Superman that we needed to preserve, while also being open to introducing changes that would potentially enhance the storyline without compromising the character’s authenticity.” (via IGN)
