Superman vs. ‘Superman’? Dean Cain cries ‘woke’ after James Gunn calls hero an immigrant
Dean Cain, previously known for his role in “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” expresses regret over the latest portrayal of Superman, which compares his tale to the immigrant journey in the United States.
During a recent chat with TMZ, the actor who played Clark Kent/Superman on the popular ’90s show, expressed curiosity: “Just how progressive will Hollywood portray this character?
58-year-old actor voiced criticism towards director James Gunn and his portrayal of Superman, as Gunn stated in an interview with The London Times that “Superman symbolizes America.” In the interview, Gunn depicted his character as an immigrant who settled in America, stating that his movie, featuring David Corenswet as the main character, primarily conveys a message that basic human kindness is a virtue and something we seem to have forgotten.

Up, up and … eh? A rebooted ‘Superman’ gives the Man of Steel a mind of marshmallow
In a new venture for director James Gunn, the DC Extended Universe kicks off with an energetic portrayal of Superman, played by David Corenswet. Accompanying him are his fellow stars, Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan.
Critic Gunn spoke out as the Trump administration intensified its hardline approach towards immigrant communities in California, with more than 2,700 undocumented individuals reportedly detained since raids started in Los Angeles on June 6, according to figures released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
It’s evident that Cain wasn’t fond of Gunn’s comments. Even before seeing the film, Cain voiced his disapproval towards the concept of altering cherished characters. Instead, he proposed the creation of fresh, original characters. As the fourth actor to embody Superman on screen after Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, and Christopher Reeve (all of whom donned the red boots), Cain argued that the superhero symbolizes truth, justice, and the American way, suggesting that changing these iconic figures might not align with the character’s enduring values.
In my perspective, America is exceptionally welcoming towards immigrants, but it’s crucial to remember that there are guidelines we must adhere to. I can’t stress enough that people come to the United States for opportunities, and that’s a beautiful aspect of our nation. Expanding on immigration as a whole, I firmly advocate for setting boundaries in immigration numbers to ensure our society thrives and continues to prosper.

In a different segment of his discussion with TMZ, Cain queries why officials from immigration services such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), along with other federal agencies, are being portrayed negatively for simply enforcing the laws that our elected representatives have established. Various videos circulating on social media show instances of masked immigration agents forcibly apprehending civilians and facing off against people trying to intervene during these arrests.

With heightened immigration enforcement raids by federal agents, critics express concern that their disguised approach fuels widespread fear and anxiety within affected communities.
Cain expressed his viewpoint that James Gunn’s statement about immigrants might have been a misstep. He further stated that this comment could potentially hurt the movie’s performance at the box office. Despite being excited for Gunn’s interpretation of the comic-book hero and hoping for its success, he disagreed with the political remark regarding Superman made by the former Marvel writer.
The movie adaptation of Gunn’s “Superman” has hit theaters, featuring Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. In her critique, Amy Nicholson from The Times says, “It’s not the emotionally uplifting ‘Superman’ I was hoping for. However, these escapades have made him wiser enough to pique my interest about where this story may lead him in future instalments.
During recent discussions about “Superman,” the White House posted a picture on social media on Thursday where Trump’s face was placed onto Superman’s body from the movie poster. This unusual digital modification prompted California Governor Gavin Newsom’s press team to respond, using a recurring argument.
“Superman was an undocumented immigrant,” the tweet read.
