For decades, Superman has been portrayed by many actors in both movies and TV shows. Now, as superhero films and series remain popular, one of the first live-action comic book adaptations is experiencing a resurgence and is set for renewed success in 2026.
Even though it originally ended in 2011, the TV show Smallville is currently very popular on Netflix. According to FlixPatrol, the DC drama is becoming a hit with viewers around the world, recently becoming a top 3 trending show in New Caledonia after becoming available in several international countries.
The show Smallville, which tells the story of Superman’s early years, is currently popular on Netflix in Martinique and Germany, ranking at #7. It first aired on The WB in 2001, and continued on that network even after it became The CW in 2006, finally ending in May 2011.
Running for many seasons, Smallville followed the early life of Clark Kent as he discovered and controlled his superpowers, ultimately becoming Superman. The show starred Tom Welling as Clark and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, exploring the origins of their famous rivalry.
The series Smallville, now available on Hulu in the US, was a major stepping stone for The CW. Its popularity helped launch the Arrowverse, a connected universe of shows that ran from 2012 to 2024. The show received further recognition when stars Tom Welling and Erica Durance returned as their characters in the 2019 event Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Following the conclusion of the TV show Smallville, the story didn’t end. DC Comics released a Season 11 comic book series that officially continues the show’s storyline, depicting what happened to Tom Welling’s Superman after the finale.
Despite ending years ago, there’s still a chance Smallville could return. Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum have been working on an idea for a new animated series, but as Welling told ScreenRant in November 2024, it ultimately depends on whether Warner Bros. decides to move forward with the project.
Tom Welling says they’re eager to make it happen, but Warner Brothers hasn’t approved the project yet. They’re waiting for the studio’s official go-ahead.
ScreenRant: Are they just not open to it, or are they just not responding?
Tom Welling chuckled, saying they haven’t heard back about the project at all. It’s strange because the idea really came from the fans, and it wouldn’t be about making a lot of money or a huge hit film. They all enjoy working together and would do it for the fun of it, but Warner Bros. hasn’t responded, and it doesn’t seem to be a priority for them right now. He emphasized he wasn’t criticizing the studio, just stating the situation.
You can watch Smallville on Hulu in the US, and on Netflix in Germany, New Caledonia, and Martinique.
