Superman star David Corenswet lands next lead movie role
As a die-hard Superman fan with years of comic book nostalgia under my belt, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of excitement upon learning about David Corenswet‘s next role in “Mr. Irrelevant.” While he may be donning an American football kit instead of the Man of Steel’s cape, the heartwarming story of John Tuggle resonates deeply with me, as I’ve always been a sucker for tales of underdog triumph.
David Corenswet, known for his role in Superman, is set to trade his superhero costume for an American football uniform as he has secured his next film part.
As reported by Deadline, Corenswet is currently discussing terms for playing the main role in the Skydance Sports film titled Mr. Irrelevant.
Drawing from true experiences, I’ll be sharing the captivating story of American football player John Tuggle, who earned his nickname after being selected as the last pick in the final round of the 1983 NFL draft by the New York Giants – that’s me!
1976 saw the origin of the nickname, which was given by USC receiver Paul Salata. Swiftly gaining popularity, it sparked a chain of incidents we now refer to as ‘Irrelevant Week’.
Despite several players bearing the same title experiencing notable triumphs, it is Tuggle’s emotional tale that underscores the profound influence he held over his entire team.
Under the direction of Jonathan Levine, known for “Tell Me Lies,” the film titled “Mr. Irrelevant” will be scripted by Nick Santora, famously credited for “Prison Break.” Levine and Gillian Bohrer, under their Megamix production company, will produce the movie. Meanwhile, Santora will contribute through his Blackjack Films label as a producer.
In another location, Corenswet has just wrapped up shooting for the forthcoming Superman film, scheduled to be released in theaters next summer.
The upcoming Superman reboot, initially known as Superman: Legacy, will feature Corenswet stepping into the role of both Clark Kent and Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult taking on the villainous Lex Luthor.
The film will showcase prominent DC characters such as Hawkgirl, portrayed by Isabela Merced; Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, acted by Nathan Fillion; Rex Mason/Metamorpho, played by Anthony Carrigan; Perry White, starring Wendell Pierce; and Jonathan Kent, featuring Pruitt Taylor Vince.
Superman is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
