Superman/Spider-Man Almost Had Unbelievable Crossovers That Marvel Turned Down

Comic book writer Dan Slott shared stories about some unusual team-ups he proposed to Marvel that never got the green light.

During a recent interview on the Word Balloon podcast with John Siuntres, Dan Slott shared some of his initial concepts for Spider-Man/Superman #1. He remembered suggesting a story where the Spider-Man ’67 cartoon crossed over with either the Filmation Superman ’66 cartoon or the SuperFriends Superman designed by Alex Toth. According to Slott, Marvel immediately rejected the idea, questioning the massive number of approvals such a crossover would require.

Dan Slott suggested a team-up between Nicholas Hammond’s Spider-Man and another version of Superman, but Marvel responded with disbelief, questioning why he thought that would be a simpler idea to approve. Ultimately, Slott wrote a story for Spider-Man/Superman featuring Spider-Man Noir alongside the original Superman from Action Comics #1. Artist Marcos Martin illustrated the story with a style heavily inspired by the 1950s Fleischer Superman cartoons.
