Superman & Lois’ Villain Brainiac Was Planned Before Show Ended, Fans Are Heartbroken
Looking back at December 2024, I can’t help but reminisce about the conclusion of “Superman & Lois” after four captivating seasons. This eventful finale not only wrapped up the storylines beautifully for each character, but it also signified the end of The CW’s nearly two-decade run of DC TV shows, marking the end of an era known as the Arrowverse.
Initially, the plan was for Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch’s series to continue for much longer, but fate had other plans. Recently, Michael Cudlitz, who played Lex Luthor in “Superman & Lois,” shared that Brainiac was intended to make an appearance in future seasons. This revelation has me feeling a pang of sadness once more, as I wish the show could have run its course instead of ending before its time.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I recently stumbled upon some intriguing tidbits during my chat with ScreenRant at Fan Expo Philadelphia. When inquired about any potential plot points for Superman & Lois that were once considered but never fully developed, the actor hinted at:
As far as I can recall, their plan seemed to be centered around Brainiac’s realm or world.
Even though Lex Luthor is often regarded as Superman’s main adversary, Brainiac consistently ranks as a very close second. In the comics and various media, Brainiac has been causing trouble for Superman for over 65 years, whether he’s portrayed as a super-intelligent alien from Colu or a malicious AI from Krypton. Notable adaptations of Brainiac outside of the printed page include his appearances in the DC Animated Universe (starting with “Superman: The Animated Series”), one of my favorites being “My Adventures with Superman”, and the live-action series “Krypton”, which did an exceptional job depicting him.

Elizabeth Tulloch, star of Superman & Lois, recently discussed the uncertain circumstances surrounding the production of Season 4. I only wish that this engaging DC series had debuted earlier for our enjoyment.
Tyler Hoechlin from Superman & Lois expresses his enthusiasm about David Corenswet’s portrayal of the Man of Steel, and I wholeheartedly share his anticipation.
Given the impressive way Superman & Lois reimagined characters like Bizarro Superman and Doomsday, I can’t help but wish they had also tackled Brainiac. It would have been fascinating to see their unique take on this character. Moreover, it’s not hard to imagine that if Michael Cudlitz knew about the Superman & Lois team’s plans for Brainiac, perhaps we could have seen a collaboration between him and Lex Luthor. Historically, these two characters have had a habit of joining forces in DC stories, and their partnerships rarely turn out well for them. Unfortunately, we can only speculate about how things might have unfolded if Cudlitz’s Luthor faced off against Brainiac.
The series titled “Superman & Lois” was terminated after four seasons due to several factors, such as changes in The CW’s programming schedule following Nexstar’s acquisition of the channel, and also reportedly to avoid conflicting with James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. Unlike other DC shows like Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and Gotham Knights, the creators of “Superman & Lois” were granted the opportunity to wrap up the storyline in a satisfying way, rather than leaving plotlines unresolved.
Although Brainiac didn’t manage to stick around in “Superman & Lois”, I’m hopeful that DC Universe will find a way to incorporate him. You can catch up on many of his earlier film and television portrayals, along with the full series of “Superman & Lois”, by subscribing to Max.
