A scene from Superman involving Krypto was reportedly cut following a “really bad” test screening.

In December, the trailer for the super-powered dog, based on writer-director James Gunn’s real-life rescued pet, touched the hearts of fans everywhere and became an instant hit.

In their interviews, Sara Sampaio and María Gabriela de Faría (Eve Teschmacher and Angela Spica) disclosed a moment in the film where Krypto, David Corenswet’s superhero sidekick, gets struck during the process of saving the world together.

On Jake’s Takes, Sampaio mentioned that the part where Ultraman hit the dog while fighting was initially included but later taken out following feedback from a test screening. He stated that the scene seemed to have a negative impact on the audience, as it performed “apparently quite poorly.

De Faria stated, “It’s not right to hit a dog…”, referring to an instance in her character where she was initially attacked by Krypto. She clarified, “I didn’t strike the dog. The dog came at me aggressively first.

Previously, Gunn, who holds the positions of co-CEO and co-chairman at DC Studios, mentioned that his interpretation of Krypto was inspired by his own pet dog, Ozu. Ozu is a rescue animal that Gunn adopted shortly after he started writing the script for Superman.

In an Instagram post, Gunn described Ozu as having a difficult personality, given that he originated from a cramped backyard with 60 other dogs and had no experience with humans. Upon arrival at their home, Ozu promptly wreaked havoc, damaging the house, shoes, furniture, and even managed to consume Gunn’s laptop.

As a movie maker, I found myself musing, ‘Boy, wouldn’t life get complicated if Ozu had superpowers?’ And just like that, Krypto made his way into the script, reshaping the narrative as Ozu was transforming my reality. In the end, I affectionately declared that Ozu is now a “really great companion” or simply put, a “very good boy”.

The movie features Corey Swieten’s character balancing his duties as both Clark Kent and the main hero (Superman), while the cast includes Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult alongside him.

Superman is released in cinemas on 11 July.
