James Gunn’s Superman movie is quickly becoming a streaming hit, even rivaling some of Netflix’s most popular films this year. Released in theaters on July 11th, the movie became available to stream on September 19th, just two months later.
According to Nielsen ratings for the week of September 22nd to 28th, Superman jumped to the second most popular movie on streaming platforms, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. It outperformed films like Elio, 28 Years Later, Ruth & Boaz, San Andreas, Ice Road: Vengeance, The Wrong Paris, Lilo & Stitch, and Shrek 2.
The movie K-Pop Demon Hunters is the only one that’s proven more popular than Superman. It’s been a huge hit for Netflix, becoming the first movie or show on the platform to reach 300 million views. This year, it stayed at number one on Netflix’s charts for an impressive 14 weeks.
Directed by James Gunn, the movie Superman successfully kicked off the new DC Universe, reimagining the iconic hero in a world already populated with other superheroes. The story centers on Superman’s battle against Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult), his search for his cousin’s super-dog Krypto, and a crucial moment in his personal life.
David Corenswet, known for his roles in Twisters and Pearl, stars as Superman in James Gunn’s new take on the character. He’s joined by Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie, Castle) as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced (The Last of Us) as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi (The Harder They Fall) as Mister Terrific.
The new Superman movie was well-received when it came out earlier this year, earning praise from both critics and audiences. It currently has an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on critic reviews (the “Tomatometer”) and a 90% audience score (the “Popcornmeter”).
With worldwide earnings of $616 million, Superman has been a major success, prompting James Gunn to announce a new film called Man of Tomorrow. Gunn has explained that this won’t be a traditional sequel, but rather a continuation of the story started in Superman. David Corenswet and Jacob Hoult will reprise their roles, and the movie will feature them working together.
James Gunn’s DC Universe just finished its second season of Peacemaker, continuing the story of conflict between ordinary people and those with superpowers. Next up is Lanterns, a True Detectiveinspired Green Lantern series coming to HBO and HBO Max in early 2026. Then, two major movies are planned for next year: Supergirl in July and Clayface* in September.
DC Universe has a lot of new projects coming soon, but if you want to start watching now, you can stream Superman on HBO Max.
