Superman and Lois season 4 episode 9 recap and ending explained: [SPOILER] returns
As a longtime fan of Superman and his endless battles against evil, I can confidently say that this season of Superman and Lois has been nothing short of thrilling. The writers have done an exceptional job of weaving together the personal lives of our beloved characters with the epic battles they face, creating a narrative that is both heartwarming and action-packed.
In the fourth season of Superman and Lois, the conflict between Lois Lane and Lex Luthor has been the central theme. It was evident from the last episode of season 3 that their paths would cross once Lex was freed from prison, and this season, their animosity has escalated significantly. Although it’s not entirely one-sided, Lex is primarily responsible for the current state of affairs, fueled by his desire for revenge against Lois for falsely imprisoning him for a crime he didn’t commit. The twist here is that Lex truly deserved to be in prison and had committed equally vile crimes (which he now seems to have forgotten).
Over the last few gaming sessions, things have really heated up between me and Lex. He’s been going after my loved ones, taking out Superman and General Lane, even threatening my kids, Jonathan and Jordan Kent, and my best friend, Mayor Lana Lang. But then, Superman came back from the dead, tired of playing peacefully, and gave Lex a good beating right here in Smallville – all without his superpowers!
Following Superman’s shocking disclosure of his true identity, Lex Luthor and Lois Lane chose to escalate their rivalry into a high-profile public debate. While Lois managed to hold her own, Lex emerged victorious thanks to the show’s biased host (Gordon Godfrey) and Amanda McCoy’s clever strategy to tarnish the truth. However, Lois Lane is not one to back down easily.
Once again, beware! This piece encompasses plot points from the ninth episode of Superman and Lois season 4, titled “To Live And Die Again.” If you wish to maintain the element of surprise, it’s best to turn back now.
Under Lex’s skin
In the last round, Lex Luthor’s cunning trick to cast doubt on Lois Lane’s reputation paid off splendidly, but let me clarify: that wasn’t my plan. Unlike other adaptations, this Lex thrives on the limelight and devious machinations, but he’s no match for the one you see before you. He’s all brawn, ready to wage war in any form, even physically. Yes, he loves to scheme, yet he’s not one to shy away from his own plans. And let me assure you, he’s as uncomfortable in a suit as he is in front of the cameras.
Lois and Clark realized they needed to retaliate for his actions during the debate, so they decided to irritate him deliberately. Superman acknowledged Amanda McCoy’s ingenious and mischievous strategy, knowing Lex Luthor wouldn’t appreciate it. True to form, Lex didn’t like sharing the spotlight, and tried to assert dominance over Amanda. How did he attempt this? By offering her a substantial portion of Luthorcorp stocks as a distraction, hoping to regain control of the plan for revenge against Lois.
In a way that echoed legend, the encounter between Superman and Lex was skillfully portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin and Michael Cudlitz, making the intense interaction between these iconic comic-book characters feel palpable to viewers.
Apart from Superman, Lex wasn’t the only one determined to bring him down. Lois Lane was more resolute than ever following his attack on her professional standing. With advertisers abandoning the Smallville Gazette due to fear of association with her, she resolved it was time to strike at Luthor where it hurt most. However, before she could devise a strategy, Amanda stormed into the Gazette office to inform her that any retaliation was pointless and threatened legal action for defamation. Frustrated, Lois contemplates her options until a chat with Clark encourages her to revisit the roots of her investigation – leading her back to Bruno Mannheim.
Lois and Mannheim share an unexpectedly touching reunion at Stryker’s Island when Lois tearfully offers her condolences for the loss of Bruno’s wife Peia. He then tells Lois that he’s glad she is in remission from cancer, and although he refuses to help her take down Luthor at first (because she was the one that let him out of prison), he eventually agrees. They do hit a wall, but upon hearing of Cheryl’s name, Bruno tells Lois that Cheryl used to be in love with Lex and he tossed her aside when she was no longer of use to him. Very much like Amanda herself.
Regarding Amanda, she feels elated when Lex gifts her company shares, but swiftly becomes dismayed as he becomes tongue-tied during their kiss and proceeds with the plan without her. The subsequent phase of the plan takes them back to Smallville to hunt down Doomsday, since Lex and Milton Fine found out that the monster was lurking in the mines, attempting to return home. Notably, John Henry Irons’ suit has been improved thanks to Milton’s assistance, and we can expect the appearance of the notorious Lex Luthor warsuit, or as Lex referred to it, “the Killer suit.
Lois tries to win over Amanda by sharing stories from his past with Cheryl. At first, Amanda seems uninterested, but Lois notices Lex’s actions and predicts his moves before Amanda can. As a result, Amanda follows Lex to Smallville, upset because he excluded her from the plan and has resorted to targeting Smallville again, this time due to his grudge against the town for refusing his money and now making him pay for it, as his current obsession centers around Smallville.
Clark was diligently teaching the boys, preparing them for future challenges, as he grappled with his own truth: His time as Superman might be limited, and he was already feeling a decline in strength. Initially strict with them because they couldn’t perform feats like him, he eventually understood (with guidance from his Kryptonian mother Lara) that this vulnerability was their unique power. They were the Super Twins, and he wanted them to leverage this teamwork when needed. Smallville would undeniably require every ounce of help it could get, especially when Doomsday returns with a roar.
In Smallville, I find myself squaring off against Lex, but instead of listening to my words, he unleashes a fierce growl, making it clear that he is the one calling the shots and has been all along. I’ve always known there was no love between us, and as he soars through the hotel roof and carries out his scheme to liberate Doomsday, my suspicions are confirmed. He reconnects with the monster deep within the mines, swearing to “exterminate him once more” in order to rid himself of any future agony. True to his word, he opens fire, which triggers Doomsday’s transformation into a comic book-accurate, spikier form.
Is Superman going to die again?
The title of this Superman and Lois episode, “To Live and Die Again”, seems to have delivered on its promise. As it concludes, Superman finds himself facing a highly energized version of Doomsday in Smallville’s town square. The battle doesn’t last long for the Man of Steel as he is swiftly overpowered by the beast. Injured and weakened, Superman tells Lois and the boys that he loves them, but before he can finish, he is hurled across town and out of sight just as the closing credits roll.
It seems like there’s some confusion about Superman’s fate, given that the show is titled “Superman and Lois” and typically, main characters aren’t killed off in their own shows. However, it’s worth noting that Superman was indeed killed off in the season premiere, and the upcoming episode marks the series finale. So, technically, yes, he could die again.
This season, the Kent family has experienced an extraordinary amount of grief and adversity. The premiere saw the loss of Clark, followed by Sam Lane in episode three. Lana Lang, their trusted friend, narrowly escaped death during this season, and their privacy was invaded when Lex set a chain of events into motion, ultimately revealing to the world that Clark Kent was Superman (a revelation he eventually controlled before Lex could exploit it further). Given the upcoming finale, it seems unfair to subject them to additional hardships at this time.
The narrative should culminate in a decisive victory, implying that Doomsday, Lex Luthor, and their adversaries must be vanquished permanently. Our cherished Steel Family should emerge victorious from this battle against evil for good, ensuring a joyful conclusion to the season and the series as a whole. This is crucial because the Kent Family deserves a contented ending.
Even so, prepare for a cinematic battle between Superman and his two archenemies from the source material. It’s undoubtedly going to be a spectacle for the ages!
In simpler terms, Superman and Lois are ending their series with an unforgettable finale, as they protect their family, town, and home from formidable adversaries who seem too powerful to overcome. Brace yourselves, this is going to be quite the spectacle!
The series finale of Superman and Lois airs on The CW next Monday, December 2, at 8/7c.
