Superman and Lois season 4 episode 4 recap and ending explained: [SPOILER] returns

As a lifelong fan of Superman and all things Kryptonian, I must say that this week’s episode of Superman and Lois was nothing short of delightful. The heartwarming moments between Clark and Lois, Kyle and Chrissy, and even Jordan and Sarah were the perfect antidote to the intense season we’ve been experiencing thus far.

The current fourth season of Superman and Lois on The CW has been tugging at everyone’s heartstrings. This isn’t unusual for the show, but what’s remarkable is how deeply it’s stirring up a wide range of emotions in us, even though we’ve only watched three (or four) episodes so far. The latest episode, “A Perfectly Good Wedding”, was an emotional rollercoaster on its own.

To date in this season, we’ve seen Superman perish, Doomsday pass his heart to Lex Luthor, who then crushed it before Jordan Kent’s eyes, and also the demise of General Sam Lane. The Kent-Lane-Irons family has had a lot on their plate recently, showcasing just how daring this spin-off series from the Arrowverse is as it approaches its final episode.

Once again, the fourth episode includes some familiar faces rejoining the crew. Specifically, this time around we have Kyle Cushing, Chrissy Beppo, and Sarah Cortez making a comeback, with Sarah having previously appeared twice before.

This piece delves into significant revelations from the fourth episode of ‘Superman and Lois’ season 4, summarizing its key occurrences and interpreting the true implications of its conclusion.

Superman Lives

The new episode starts off unexpectedly, picking up exactly where the last one ended: Lois is standing by her father’s grave on the Kent Farm, with the boys inside the house, still wearing their Hawaiian shirts as a tribute to their grandfather. The scene is set against the stunning backdrop of the sunset over the clouds. This breathtaking view is the first thing we see in the episode, and it reappears shortly after. And soon, we learn why this scene is so significant.

In the sky above, Jordan, Jonathan, and Lois all notice something approaching from the clouds. Looking up, they spot Superman descending onto the farm, wearing his traditional Clark Kent eyeglasses as part of his suit. Lois and Clark share a tender moment before rushing towards each other for an emotional reunion. Soon, the brothers emerge from the house to join in the warm welcome, symbolizing that Superman is alive once more and the Kent family has been reunited.

After bypassing several pivotal events such as Clark realizing Jonathan has powers or the townsfolk of Smallville learning about Superman’s return, we fast-forward a few weeks in time. Despite this, life at the Kent household is running smoothly. The people of Smallville are aware that Clark has returned, but the rest of the world remains oblivious to Superman’s comeback. Lois is determined to maintain this secrecy until they are certain Clark can withstand Doomsday, as once Lex Luthor learns about it, Doomsday will be on their doorstep.

Although Clark is quite endearing, there seems to be some underlying issues. The surgical mark on his chest, where Sam’s heart was transplanted, hasn’t fully healed. Moreover, during a training session at the Fortress, his heart momentarily stopped beating, causing him to lose consciousness while flying. This incident understandably alarmed Jonathan, yet Clark tried to minimize it, reassuring both Jonathan and Lois. It later becomes clear that these are not the only peculiar symptoms Clark has been experiencing.

It transpires that Clark’s extraordinary hearing ability is only partially functional, leaving him struggling to hear clearly through one ear. Additionally, he becomes intoxicated more easily and appears incapable of exerting himself excessively. This raises questions about whether he can continue being Superman with an elderly human heart pounding within his chest. However, an opportunity to address this question arises when he saves Jonathan from a trap devised by Lex Luthor.

In this rephrased version: Superman leaps into action to rescue his son, charging head-on against fire attacks unleashed by a thug hired by Lex Luthor with the intention of harming Gretchen, who was contemplating betrayal. The Steel Man put on a stunningly new outfit and swiftly dealt with the fresh menace, ensuring victory and reminding himself that he remains capable of being a hero.

On a joyous occasion, Clark and Lois opt for a private evening, choosing to disregard the numerous alerts on their phones from media networks and speculative sources, all hinting at the sensational headline: “Superman is Alive!

A Perfectly Good Wedding

In this episode, Kyle Cushing and Chrissy Beppo returned for their initial appearances of the season. Previously, it was revealed that Chrissy was pregnant and Kyle had proposed to her. Since then, a lot has transpired as they are about to tie the knot very soon. However, an unexpected twist arises when the venue gets flooded, prompting Lois to generously offer the Kent Farm as an alternative location. Chrissy is amenable to this, but only if Lois will stand by her side as Maid of Honor. Meanwhile, Kyle requests Clark to be his best man.

Despite the hasty nature of their marriage, it’s not going smoothly as expected, given Chrissy’s strained relationship with her mother. True to form, her mother questions their motives, causing Chrissy to grapple with similar doubts. These uncertainties linger in her mind, and despite Sarah’s attempts to reassure her, when the former goes to fetch water, she comes back to find that Chrissy has fled.

In the heart of Smallville’s town square, Lois locates Chrissy on the Martha Kent bench. It is here that Chrissy admits her hesitation about marrying Kyle, as she feels they don’t know each other deeply enough yet. This moment prompts Lois to ponder over her long-standing relationship with Clark and the essential elements that have kept it strong. Inspired by this reflection, Chrissy expresses a desire for a similar deep bond with Kyle; she communicates her wish to delay their wedding, aiming to spend more quality time together. Gracious and understanding, Kyle consents, and they decide to use the wedding as an opportunity to throw a party instead, filling the night with lively dancing and a sense of joyful camaraderie.

It’s refreshing to have a break during this particularly intense season, and it’s heartwarming to see Clark and Lois, Kyle and Chrissy, and even Jordan and Sarah expressing themselves through dance. Although the wedding lacked the presence of Lana and the Irons family, the show did an impressive job under the constraints it faced.

How will Lex Luthor react to Superman’s return?

The finale of episode 4 in season 4 of Superman and Lois has set up a future confrontation between Superman and Doomsday. After being back for several weeks, Clark Kent had been keeping a low profile while trying to ascertain if his condition would enable him to regain his maximum strength. However, with Superman’s intervention in saving Jonathan, the world is now aware of his existence once more, and it’s only a matter of time before Lex Luthor discovers this too.

It’s confusing to pinpoint our current position in the storyline since Clark Kent has been around for quite a while now. One might wonder if Lex Luthor, residing in Smallville, wouldn’t have spotted Clark or at least heard about his return through local gossip. Since Lex wasn’t present in this episode, it seems plausible that he returned to Metropolis to deal with Luthorcorp matters, as hinted at in the second episode of the season. Regardless, we may anticipate Doomsday making an appearance on the Kent farm sooner rather than later.

The wild card in this situation might be Jonathan Kent. Unlike in their past encounter where he didn’t possess powers, he now has all his abilities. Given his current situation, with his father being weakened, he could certainly benefit from some training. However, the question remains whether the assistance from one of the Super Sons would be sufficient to defeat Doomsday.

In the episode, Jordan didn’t ignore Lois, instead, they reconciled and he chose to step away from heroism momentarily, giving his uniform to Jonathan. Yet, the lingering guilt about his unsuccessful endeavor to retrieve Superman’s heart doesn’t diminish the truth that he remains a Kryptonian superhero at the core. Though his powers are less consistent and perhaps even less powerful than Jonathan’s abilities, Jordan will still play a crucial role in defeating Luthor in this war.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but ponder over a hypothetical scenario: Even in a weakened state, Superman – the Man of Steel – alongside his two Super Sons, could potentially bring Doomsday to its knees. If that were to happen, it would be left to Lois Lane to handle Lex Luthor.

Never bet against the Fam of Steel!

Superman and Lois season 4 airs new episodes on The CW every Monday night at 8/7c.
