Superman and Lois season 4 episode 3 ending explained: Is [SPOILER] really dead?
As a longtime fan of Superman and his supporting cast, I must say that the departure of Sam Lane has left a significant void in my heart. Having followed the character since his early appearances, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and sadness as we bid farewell to Dylan Walsh’s portrayal of General Lane.
In the concluding season of “Superman and Lois,” the storyline began with a shocking twist that significantly altered the course of events. This is no mere exaggeration, as the premiere episode literally depicted Superman’s demise. Indeed, the Steel Man met his end before the eyes of viewers, as this popular CW series brought to life one of the most renowned and controversial storylines in DC Comics lore.
It was a bold way to start what is gearing up to be the show’s final outing, but it has received an incredibly positive response, allowing the tighter fourth season (which only features the core four and Lex Luthor in the regular cast) to tell a more personal story.
The third episode of the season carries on with the trend set by “Always My Hero”, tugging at our emotional heartstrings and leaving us in pieces simultaneously. In other words, it’s another heart-wrenching episode that will surely move you to tears.
As a devoted fan who has been following “Superman and Lois” since its debut, I can confidently say that this warning is not just a formality for me. I’ve experienced the heart-wrenching twists and turns of previous seasons, and I know all too well how the revelations in season 4, episode 3 could potentially shake my fandom to its core. If you’re like me, someone who values the suspense and emotional impact that comes with each new episode, heed this warning and prepare yourself for major spoilers.
Jonathan Kent takes center stage in Superman and Lois season 4
The fourth season of Superman and Lois commences with a funeral in its third episode. Lois Lane, along with Jonathan and Jordan Kent, are seen preparing to part ways with someone dear. Through a heartfelt narration, Lois shares her struggle with saying goodbye, expressing that no words can truly convey the depth of their significance. During this emotional moment, she casts a sorrowful glance towards Clark Kent’s spectacles, which sit on the bedside table.
Following the opening sequence, we find ourselves at the Kent Farm at a new moment in time, where Lois and the boys are trying to navigate the challenging process of moving forward after a significant loss. Before Lois can even start to move on, she feels compelled to share with the world that Superman is no more, as her article has been published. The boys understand this decision but don’t necessarily agree with it, leading to an emotional outburst from Jonathan, who attributes Jordan for losing Superman’s heart, which would have brought their father back to life.
In a storm cellar, where Clark’s spacecraft remains, Jordan joins his twin brother, and the scene turns intensely emotional. Jonathan, overwhelmed with feelings, lashes out at Jordan. He voices his anguish about Jordan developing powers and the loss of their father. His anger is palpable as he punches the shelves forcefully, causing himself to bleed. Michael Bishop delivers a powerful portrayal of Jonathan’s sorrow in this scene.
Then, the stunning disclosure: Jonathan’s extraordinary abilities manifest, his wounded hand miraculously mends, and he acquires X-ray vision simultaneously. Jordan gazes in amazement, but he is well aware of what transpired: The more mature, composed, and desiring brother now possesses the powers he had always yearned for. In a twist that surpasses even this, they all activated at once: Including the ability to take flight.
This incident feeds into Jordan’s ongoing worries about being overshadowed by Jonathan, who was perceived as the favorite child; worries that Lex Luthor exploits. In the farm visit, Lex plays a recording of the threatening phone call he made to Lois in the last episode – a call where she chose Jonathan over him during the rescue scenario. From Lois’ point of view, Jonathan lacked powers, making Jordan more likely to survive any attacks from Lex. However, this knowledge didn’t alleviate Jordan’s feelings as he faced his mother and brother at the DOD.
Jonathan had arrived to see his grandfather and prepare for potential training, should the world require a fresh hero. General Sam Lane, who believed in Jonathan’s leadership qualities, now presented an opportunity for him to demonstrate his abilities with newfound powers. However, it wasn’t just his encounter with Jordan that kept him from meeting with Sam; there were other obstacles as well.
Always My Hero
In this episode, Sam Lane found himself right in the thick of things (to put it casually) when he determined to devise a strategy for safeguarding a world without Superman. The odds appeared insurmountable, yet his first move was to enlist John Henry and Natalie Irons into the Department of Defense. Their previous intention for season 3 (migrating to Metropolis) no longer seemed viable, as Steel and Starlight had become Earth’s sole defense against Lex and Doomsday. It looked as if they might be augmented by Jonathan’s presence, as Sam was elated to discover that his other grandson had acquired all the superpowers.
Apart from his main strategy, Sam had a backup plan too. This involved a Kryptonian superpower-granting serum that Bruno Mannheim used in season 3. He managed to secure the last remaining sample from General Hardcastle and was on the hunt for a suitable recipient. However, prior to locating one, he encountered a Defense Department agent. This agent was under duress from Luthor, who was threatening his family, and was insisting on learning Sam’s whereabouts – Luthor’s daughter.
A significant portion of the episode delved into flashbacks showing Clark and Lois’ past relationship, but this time seen from Sam’s perspective. We witnessed the scene where Clark disclosed his identity as Superman to a general. Following this revelation, there was a flashback of Clark asking Sam for permission to propose to Lois. Sam hesitated, concerned that Clark might eventually be taken away from Lois due to his role as Superman, causing her undue sorrow.
Eventually, I found myself reluctantly at Clark and Lois’ wedding, catching a heartfelt conversation between Clark and Martha Kent. Later on, I had a talk with Lois, and we both pledged to be courageous. She looked at me, and I promised her that I would always stand tall for her. All of a sudden, I was hit by a wave of intense emotions. It was clear where this was going, and my heart was racing.
Currently, Sam found himself in a perilous situation after being shot accidentally by a DOD officer during an argument over the whereabouts of his daughter. Before succumbing to his injuries, he administered the serum to himself and collaborated with John Henry and Natalie on a strategy. Although their discussion isn’t shown, we find Sam engaged in a battle against Doomsday outside the DOD. The monster demanded information for Lex, but Sam remained steadfast in his silence. He looked at his daughter with a brave smile, symbolizing his unwavering courage for her sake. In that moment, Doomsday seized Sam by the head and ended his life instantly.
Later on, it became clear that Sam had directed the Irons to transport his body to the Fortress of Solitude, where Clark’s mother was to initiate the procedure of moving his serum-infused heart into Superman’s body, a move that could prolong his life. Lara cautions them that the process may take several days and might involve additional challenges.
In a different tone: Sam constructed a three-dimensional message as a hologram for Lois, expressing how she was the most precious present in his life and the finest event that had ever occurred to him. However, it’s heartrendingly tragic as Lois weeps, having experienced another substantial loss within just a few days. He admits that his initial reservations about her marrying Superman stemmed from love, and now he is willing to go to any lengths to preserve that affection, even if it means offering the Man of Steel his own heart; understanding that it will continuously pulse for her every day.
The scene shifts back to the funeral at the start of the episode, which turns out to be for Sam instead of Clark. The boys, dressed in vibrant Hawaiian shirts as a tribute to their grandfather, stand beside Lois. The Irons are also present, and Lois expresses her deep gratitude for having Sam as her father, referring to him as her constant hero. To be honest, everyone feels the same way – we’re all grateful for Sam. He truly deserved more.
The episode ends back at the Fortress as Superman opens his eyes!
Is Sam Lane really dead in Superman and Lois?
It’s clear that the series “Superman and Lois” continues to impress, dominating our expectations for a second consecutive week. This season has been brimming with poignant moments, even at episode 3, but was “Always My Hero” really the last we see of General Sam Lane?
Regrettably, yes, Dylan Walsh was indeed among seven cast members from “Superman and Lois” who were not brought back as series regulars in its final season. This move was part of The CW’s efforts to lower their budget. Initially, it seemed like Walsh wouldn’t reappear at all, but he eventually consented to return for two episodes. Those episodes have already been aired, which means we’ve bid farewell to the character of Sam Lane on the show.
As a devoted viewer, I can’t help but feel a wave of disbelief and sorrow after watching this recent episode. The fact that Sam, who had miraculously survived a brush with death in the season opener, was plunged into another life-threatening situation – and this time, it seemed final – took me aback. However, considering the limited number of episodes both the storyline and Walsh’s appearance spanned, it’s not surprising that his two appearances were so closely timed.
The sudden demise of Sam seemed somewhat unfair for such a cherished character, yet it fittingly reflected the general’s unyielding nature. Sam is a man who will go to any lengths to safeguard his family, and he firmly believes that resurrecting Superman offers the best opportunity for this. Therefore, if he felt compelled to give up his life for this purpose, he was entirely willing to do so.
RIP General Lane. Thank you for your service!
Superman and Lois season 4 airs on The CW on Monday nights at 8/7c.
