Superman 3: DCU Movie Gets Exciting Update as Man of Tomorrow Casting Continues

It looks like Superman‘s adventures in the DC Universe won’t end with James Gunn‘s Man of Tomorrow.

With filming for the upcoming DCU movie, Man of Tomorrow, starting this month in Atlanta – directed by James Gunn who also wrote the script – news about who will be cast is becoming more frequent. This week, reports suggest several actors are being considered to play Maxima, a complex alien queen from Almerac who has a complicated history with Superman, sometimes opposing him, sometimes helping, and even becoming a potential love interest.

As a huge DC fan, I’d been hearing whispers that Maxima might just be a placeholder, maybe a disguise for someone bigger like Wonder Woman. But Jeff Sneider, who’s usually spot-on with this stuff, cleared it up in his newsletter, The InSneider. He said they’re actually casting for Maxima – no hidden agendas or surprises! It seems DC Studios is really going with the character as she is, which is exciting.

Man of Tomorrow will tee up a third DCU Superman movie

I just got some interesting intel about Maxima! Apparently, she pops up briefly in Man of Tomorrow, but don’t blink – her role is small. The real payoff, though, is that she’s being set up to be a much more significant player in the planned third Superman movie. It seems the filmmakers have big plans for her down the line.

DC Studios hasn’t officially announced a third Superman movie, but James Gunn mentioned in October 2025 that he’s planning a four-movie arc for David Corenswet as Superman.

Last year, on The Viall Files podcast, James Gunn explained he focuses on the bigger picture, asking himself, ‘What’s the overall story I want to tell with Superman across four films?’

Superman, Man of Tomorrow, and the new Supergirl series – where David Corenswet will appear in a smaller role – are all planned as part of a larger four-film story arc called the “Superman Saga.” A third standalone Superman movie would finish this plan. However, Warner Bros. and DC Studios will likely only greenlight Superman 3 if Supergirl and Man of Tomorrow prove successful at the box office.

I’m hearing that James Gunn has narrowed down the actors who could play Maxima to just four! Apparently, Adria Arjona, Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler, and Grace Van Patten all recently did screen tests with him in Atlanta. It sounds like they’re seriously being considered, which is really exciting!

The movie Man of Tomorrow is set to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027. It’s the fourth film in the first chapter of the DC Universe, titled Gods & Monsters.
