Superman 2025 Decanonizes Key Detail from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad
In James Gunn’s last DC film, “The Suicide Squad,” a significant occurrence might not be part of the storyline in the new DC universe anymore. Previously, Gunn suggested that the events portrayed in “The Suicide Squad” and its spin-off series, “Peacemaker,” share similarities with the old DC Extended Universe (DCEU), but with significant changes like eliminating Justice League appearances from the HBO show.
As a devoted movie critic, I found myself captivated by the opening scene of Superman, where this iconic character plunged into the icy Arctic waters. The screen was adorned with text that skillfully reintroduced the reimagined Superman and his universe, subtly mentioning, “Three minutes ago, I lost my first family.” This intriguing revelation, followed by Ultraman’s powerful blow to David Corenswet’s DCU hero, casts a shadow of doubt over one significant event hinted at in The Suicide Squad’s narrative.
In the realm of cinematic experiences, watching “The Suicide Squad” unfold felt like stepping into a world where the anti-heroic protagonists were given their due backstories. And as for one such character, the formidable Robert DuBois, also known by his moniker Bloodsport, I found myself captivated by Amanda Waller’s revelation of his past. It seemed that this man had been imprisoned in Belle Reve for a daring act – one that left Superman battling for life in the ICU, all thanks to a bullet laced with Kryptonite. Quite a tale, wouldn’t you agree?
It appears that, since Superman hadn’t lost a single battle during his first three years as a hero, until Ultraman appeared on the scene, there might be a change in Bloodsport’s backstory being portrayed in the DC Universe.
This statement can be rephrased as: The timeline of the movie “The Suicide Squad” is around mid-2021, while “Superman” seems to be set in 2025. Given this, it’s possible that Superman, who has been active for just three years at the start of his movie, may not have appeared on Earth yet by the time Bloodsport takes a shot.
In a recent post on Bluesky, I shared insights about the connections between ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Peacemaker’ in relation to the DC Universe. I emphasized that anything beyond ‘Creature Commandos’ is purely canonical.
In brief: The events involving the Creature Commandos are considered canonical. This includes the death of Rick Flag Jr, which was mentioned by Rick Flag Sr in the Creature Commandos series, and not depicted in The Suicide Squad.
As a fan, I’d say he hinted that “The Suicide Squad” might maintain a fair amount of continuity within this fresh universe. However, he seems to appreciate it more like an “imperfect recollection,” implying a slightly flawed or subjective perspective.
The series ‘Peacemaker’ closely follows the main storyline (canon), except for a few differences compared to the original. ‘The Suicide Squad’, however, shares many similarities with the canon but is like a slightly flawed recollection of it.
Previously, Gunn had expressed uncertainty about who exactly the Man of Steel, portrayed by Henry Cavill, was shot by Bloodsport in the film. He hinted that it might have been someone else, as this decision was made prior to his involvement with DC Studios, which took place over a year after the movie’s release.
How Bloodsport Fits Into the New DCU
It’s uncertain at this point if Bloodsport will make a comeback in the new DC Universe. Regardless, the circumstances that led him to Belle Reve under the reboot are not significant for now. However, since his shooting Peacemaker in “The Suicide Squad” initiated the events of his HBO Max series, it’s likely he is currently somewhere else.
Before the announcement of the DCU reboot, Idris Elba revealed that he had a significant project in the works for his return to the DC comics universe. At the moment, it’s undecided if Elba will be involved in any forthcoming DCU productions. However, with Gunn now in charge, let’s hope there’ll be space for Bloodsport and other Suicide Squad members within the new direction.
Following the events of “The Suicide Squad,” I, a movie buff, found myself cheering for Bloodsport as he miraculously survived the Starro ordeal in Corto Maltese and managed to escape ARGUS custody alongside Harley Quinn, Ratcatcher II, and King Shark. However, the story didn’t end there, as King Shark was re-imprisoned in the finale of “Creature Commandos.” Consequently, Robert DuBois, aka Bloodsport, might be roaming freely somewhere within the DCU just like King Shark was recruited for Task Force M.
