Supergirl’s Lobo Can Set Up a Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow

This summer is shaping up to be huge for movies, and Supergirl is set to be a major part of the new DC Universe. The film falls chronologically between Superman and Man of Tomorrow, which creates a perfect opportunity for the villain Brainiac to appear. He could cause trouble in Supergirl before moving his battle to Metropolis. Since Supergirl is drawing inspiration from the Woman of Tomorrow storyline and introducing fresh ideas, the idea that Brainiac will appear feels very plausible.

Brainiac, a powerful alien villain obsessed with collecting worlds and knowledge, hasn’t appeared in a live-action Superman film yet. Given his significant backstory with both Superman and Krypton, it’s logical that James Gunn might introduce him in Man of Tomorrow. A great way to do this would be to first showcase Brainiac’s evil plans in Supergirl, setting the stage for the upcoming 2027 Superman/Lex Luthor movie.

For the first time in the DC Universe, the new Supergirl series will closely follow a specific comic book storyline. This version of Supergirl finds herself on distant planets and struggling with personal issues. The story begins with her celebrating her birthday when she’s unexpectedly pulled into a dangerous mission: a quest for revenge and to rescue her beloved companion, Krypto.

A young alien, Ruthye, seeks Supergirl’s help to get revenge on Krem, the alien from the Yellow Hills who murdered her father and left her stranded. The story also explores Kara’s own feelings of uncertainty and her search for meaning in life.

King and Evely’s comic is widely loved by fans. Their story boldly reimagined Supergirl, and the result is considered one of the best series ever written for the character. It offered a fresh look at Kara’s background and the challenges she’s faced since Krypton was destroyed, making it a truly exceptional work.

Because the DC Universe is just starting, many characters are being introduced for the first time. We saw a quick appearance from Kara in the Superman movie, where she left to explore another world with a red sun. A significant change in this new universe is that Supergirl is now younger than Superman, a departure from the usual storyline where she was born on Argo City after Krypton’s destruction.

She’s witnessed the slow, tragic deaths of her people from kryptonite poisoning, ultimately leading to her journey to Earth with Kal-El. This backstory makes Woman of Tomorrow an ideal starting point for her in the DCU, allowing her to be portrayed as both vulnerable and damaged in a way that feels authentic. The story will show Kara finding her purpose and embracing her heroic potential. Furthermore, the introduction of Lobo hints that the villain Brainiac might also appear in the film.

Lobo Was Going to be in the Original Woman of Tomorrow Comic

Some readers of the Woman of Tomorrow comic were worried about Lobo being included, as he wasn’t originally in the story and they feared he’d overshadow Krem’s storyline with Supergirl. However, Tom King addressed those concerns by explaining his initial vision for the comic and how Lobo fit into it.

I’ve always been fascinated by how Tom King drew inspiration from the classic film True Grit when crafting the dynamic between Lobo and Supergirl. He envisioned a similar relationship to Rooster Cogburn and Mattie – Lobo as the gruff, morally gray Rooster, and Supergirl as the determined Mattie. It’s incredible to learn that his original idea involved Lobo so directly! Sadly, an editor at DC suggested a different approach, and that’s how the character of Ruthye came to be, stepping into the role Mattie originally held in King’s vision.

It appears Jason Momoa will have a similar role in Supergirl as he did previously. While he’s stated his part is small, it could be very important for the future of the DC Universe and its villains.

Supergirl Can Connect Brainiac to the Events of Man of Tomorrow

The DC Universe is already feeling naturally connected, and that trend continues with the addition of Aaron Pierre to the cast of Man of Tomorrow. Supergirl has a fantastic opportunity to really tie everything together by introducing Brainiac and the central conflict from Man of Tomorrow, making the DCU feel cohesive and interconnected.

Given Lobo’s profession as a bounty hunter in the DC Universe, it’s logical he might be pursuing Ruthye, bringing him into conflict with Supergirl. Alternatively, he could be working for Brainiac, who is known for collecting rare beings. It would be compelling to see Brainiac regularly hire bounty hunters to capture unique creatures and alien species – and Kryptonians would likely be his prime targets.

If Brainiac discovered Supergirl but couldn’t capture her, he might tell the original Brainiac, hoping to get a better reward. This could result in Brainiac targeting not just Supergirl, but Earth itself – a planet full of fascinating things to collect, especially now with the rise of people with superpowers and other unusual creatures. It makes sense that Supergirl and Lobo would accidentally lead Brainiac to Earth, rather than him simply arriving unexpectedly.

Even if Lobo appears briefly in Supergirl, it’s important that his role makes a strong impression. Giving him the responsibility of being one of the DC Universe’s initial major villains would be a good choice, especially considering Jason Momoa’s previous work. Plus, fans would love to see a genuinely connected DC Universe, something the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t focused on as much lately. Either way, Supergirl is poised to be a big success for both DC Studios and the character herself.
