Supergirl’s excellent trailer reveals Milly Alcock’s reluctant hero and Jason Momoa’s new DC role

Milly Alcock recently appeared as Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) in the movie Superman, marking her first role in the DC Universe. She’ll be the star of her own Supergirl movie next June, and the just-released trailer is sure to get you hyped!

The trailer, set to Blondie’s ‘Call Me’, shows Supergirl celebrating her 23rd birthday. She then joins forces with Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley) for an adventure in space that could help her fully embrace her role as a superhero.

Even just from the trailer, it’s obvious that director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira are taking a different approach to Superman than James Gunn did. As Supergirl explains in the trailer, their perspectives are quite different: he focuses on the best in people, while she’s more focused on reality.

However, the biggest highlight is that, like the Superman films, this movie also includes Krypto, the popular super-dog, who appears in the trailer.

The trailer introduces Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, the film’s villain, and offers a brief, dark glimpse of Jason Momoa’s first appearance as the bounty hunter Lobo in the new DC Universe, following his role as Aquaman in the previous DC films (whether you call that the Worlds of DC, DC Extended Universe, or SnyderVerse).

In addition to the title character, Supergirl features David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Supergirl’s parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze.

If you enjoyed the trailer, mark your calendar! Supergirl arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026.

At a preview event for the film, producer James Gunn shared that he wanted to base the movie on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series even before taking on his role as co-head of DC Studios, as reported by Digital Spy.

I spoke with Peter Safran and recommended a book by Tom King, telling him how compelling it was and how it offered a fresh perspective on Supergirl. I mentioned that I hadn’t yet learned the actress’s name, but I was convinced Milly Alcock would be ideal for the role, envisioning a ‘rock and roll’ take on the character.

Alcock explained that Supergirl’s background is very different from Superman’s. She grew up on a planet that was failing, and she’s lost everyone she’s ever cared about.

This experience has made her guarded and distrustful, building up strong emotional walls. She’s naturally skeptical of others. Clark, however, is quite the opposite – he’s openly trusting and always expects the best in people, likely because he’s lived a very protected and comfortable life.

He’s putting on an act, but Kara is always genuine. If she’s not feeling her best, it shows. She’s refreshingly authentic, which is great to work with.

Supergirl is released in cinemas on 26 June 2026.
