Supergirl Trailer Shows James Gunn’s DCU May Do Something Most Superhero Movies Don’t

The new trailer for Supergirl hints that the film could be different from most superhero movies and accomplish something unique.

The new Supergirl movie from Warner Bros. and DC Studios will be in U.S. theaters next summer. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film features Milly Alcock returning as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, following her brief appearance in James Gunn’s Superman (released in 2025). A first look at the movie was recently shared in a teaser trailer.

What does the Supergirl trailer tell us about James Gunn’s DCU?

The new trailer for the Supergirl movie hints it might be one of the most faithful adaptations of the comic books we’ve seen. A key line spoken by Kara, “Krypton didn’t die in a day. The gods are not that kind,” is taken word-for-word from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

The movie appears to be closely following the plot of the original miniseries, where Kara joins forces with a girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley) to avenge a villain called Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). This revenge plot is triggered by something happening to Krypto. While the movie stays true to the source material, there are some differences – Krem’s appearance is altered, and the character Lobo doesn’t appear at all, unlike in the miniseries.

It’s impressive that this film appears to follow the same story as the original miniseries, something DC and Marvel movies don’t often achieve. While both companies draw inspiration from comics, they rarely adapt them faithfully. Though Superman captured the feel of certain DC comics, it told a completely new story. Similarly, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War differed significantly from the comic book version. Animated adaptations are usually more accurate, but filmmakers often believe comics and movies are too different to adapt directly, which isn’t necessarily true.

Supergirl’s approach might signal a new trend for the DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Instead of loosely basing stories on comics, they could be directly adapting popular storylines. This makes it more likely we’ll see faithful adaptations of well-known tales like Batman: Death in the Family or Kingdom Come.
