The recent trailer for Supergirl showed a few scenes on Krypton, leading some fans to wonder if we’re getting a preview of the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow and its villain, Brainiac, since he’s linked to Krypton’s destruction. However, these scenes actually hint at a different event that happened when Krypton fell.
The upcoming Supergirl movie, directed by Craig Gillespie and set to release in 2026, will be different from James Gunn’s Superman. While Superman is Earth-based, Supergirl will primarily take place in space, following Kara Zor-El as she journeys across the galaxy to help a young girl named Ruthye seek revenge and justice. The latest trailer also reveals the film will delve into Supergirl’s sad backstory as a Kryptonian, but it doesn’t appear Brainiac will be involved—at least not for now.
Supergirl’s First Trailer Featured Argo City (NOT Brainiac’s Bottled City of Kandor)

The new Supergirl trailer initially appears to show the city of Kandor being shrunk and placed inside a bottle. This event happened in the original comics when the villain Brainiac captured the city to save a part of Kryptonian civilization before its destruction – something he’d done before to other worlds, preserving their culture and people.
Superman eventually saves the lost city of Kandor and keeps it safe within his Fortress of Solitude. But the city shown in the Supergirl trailer isn’t Kandor—it’s actually Argo City, where Kara Zor-El grew up with her parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, in the comic books.
In the comic books, Zor-El built a massive energy shield around Argo City to protect it when Krypton exploded. This shield also trapped enough air to keep the city’s inhabitants alive as it drifted away from the doomed planet.
Over time, the ground on the city-asteroid began to suffer from contamination, and radiation poisoning killed a large part of Argo’s population. While Zor-El built protective shields to reduce the number of deaths, thousands were still lost.
After Argo City was hit by an asteroid storm, Zor-El built a rocket based on his father’s plans to save his daughter, Kara. Sadly, while Kara escaped, her parents and everyone else on Krypton perished, a tragedy Supergirl references in the latest trailer by stating, “Krypton didn’t die in a single day.”
Will Supergirl Set Up Man of Tomorrow? It’s Possible

Just because the latest trailer for Supergirl doesn’t show or hint at Brainiac, it’s still possible we’ll see him in the actual movie when it comes out next year.
We already know David Corenswet’s Superman will eventually appear in the Supergirl series. Beyond a quick look at how they first met, it’s likely Kal-El will ask Kara for help when facing Brainiac, or perhaps he’ll discover Kandor, which could lead to some major storylines for the Man of Tomorrow movie in 2027.
Either way, it’s going to be fascinating to see more of Supergirl the closer we get to its release.
Supergirl is set to release on June 26th, 2026 from DC Studios.
