Supergirl stars to reunite on-screen for new series

As a die-hard Supergirl fan who has followed Melissa Benoist’s journey from Glee to the Girl of Steel and beyond, I couldn’t be more excited about her reunion with Chris Wood on NBC’s new series Duo! It’s fantastic to see these talented actors collaborate once again after their memorable stint in Supergirl.

It’s hard to accept that three years have passed since Supergirl concluded its run. The Steel Girl joined forces with her past and present (and even future) allies against the malicious duo of Lex Luthor and Nyxly, culminating in a two-part finale that wrapped up not only the sixth season but the entire series’ storyline. The climax was spectacular, leaving fans of the Arrowverse teary-eyed with its poignant conclusion.

The finale of the show signaled the start of the wind-down for DC TV shows on The CW, and it all culminated in this point as the final one, “Superman and Lois” spinoff of Supergirl, has now finished filming. Some stars from Supergirl, notably Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, and Jenna Dewan, reprised their roles, but Melissa Benoist, who plays Supergirl, didn’t have the opportunity to do so. There were whispers that she might, but once the series separated itself from the broader Arrowverse, it became improbable.

Indeed, fans of Supergirl can look forward to seeing Benoist sharing the screen once more with one of her former co-stars in a fresh television production.

Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood to lead new NBC series Duo

According to Deadline, the stars of Supergirl, Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood, are set to team up again in a new NBC series titled Duo. The series is penned by Wood himself, with Rina Mimoun serving as showrunner. Additionally, Three Things Productions, owned by Benoist, will produce the show.

The show is characterized as a family-focused drama that brings together real-life duo Benoist and Wood on-screen. In this production, Wood portrays a working-class individual who encounters Benoist’s captivating performer. Their meeting results in the formation of a two-person band, which catapults them to stardom. This newfound fame influences not only their personal lives but also those of their family members.

For six seasons, Benoist played the character Kara Danvers, also known as Supergirl, on the DC TV series. Wood joined the show in its second season as a regular, portraying Mon-El of Daxam. He stayed with the show for its third season and left at its end, returning later for guest spots during its fifth and sixth seasons. Before that, Benoist was most recognized for her role as Marley Rose on Fox’s “Glee,” while Wood had already built a reputation on The CW, particularly for his portrayal of the villainous Kai Parker in “The Vampire Diaries.

Back in 2015, I found myself captivated by the debut of Supergirl on CBS, later migrating to The CW for its second season, seamlessly fitting into the Arrowverse family. As Steel’s Girl, I became a regular in the annual crossovers with my fellow DC heroes, gracing screens during episodes of Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman. Although Superman and Lois didn’t feature me directly, their series existence owes a debt to Supergirl, ensuring that its influence lingers on in the years following its conclusion after six thrilling seasons, ending in 2021.

After retiring her superhero costume, Benoist has taken on roles in “The Girls of the Bus” and will be seen next in the Netflix series “The Waterfront”. On the other hand, Wood has graced Broadway with her presence in “Almost Famous” and provides the voice for the main character He-Man in the Netflix animated series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation”, where Benoist also stars as Teela.

Duo represents their fifth joint endeavor, following Supergirl, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and brief roles in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Clerks III, which were both projects they worked on together as a couple.
