So, I recently learned something interesting about the upcoming Supergirl movie. Director Craig Gillespie admitted he hadn’t actually read the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic before taking the job! He put his trust in screenwriter Ana Nougeira to fill him in on what to expect. It’s funny because when the project was first announced last year, James Gunn specifically said the movie would be based on that Tom King and Biliqus Evely miniseries – they even considered using the comic’s title for the film. Nougeira, who’s also writing the new Wonder Woman and Teen Titans movies, was brought on to write the script, and Gillespie – you might know him from I, Tonya – signed on to direct back in April.
At CCXP 2025, director Craig Gillespie revealed to audiences (via Screen Rant) that he hadn’t read the “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic book before agreeing to direct the film. He explained that he intentionally read screenwriter Ana Nogueira’s script first, wanting to see how it stood on its own. Gillespie admitted he was unfamiliar with Supergirl’s history, adding that this actually made him an ideal test audience – any questions he had could be addressed, and he praised Nogueira for crafting a strong narrative (as reported by DC News). He specifically highlighted Nogueira’s work.
We’ve talked about the Tom King book a lot, and it’s worth noting that it really stands out. If you’re reading it now, you’ll see it’s quite unique.
How Close Will ‘Supergirl’ Stick to the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ Comic?

Warner Bros.
Director James Gunn didn’t read the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book before starting work on the Supergirl movie. He wanted to approach the film as a fresh adaptation, without being influenced by the comic’s existing look and feel. He read the comic later, but his initial understanding came from the screenplay. This might explain why the movie’s visuals differ from the comic’s style – he developed his own interpretation of the story. Some viewers have pointed out similarities between Supergirl and Guardians of the Galaxy, but the film’s overall aesthetic is consistent with Gillespie’s previous work on movies like I, Tonya and Cruella, and the series Pam & Tommy.
The upcoming Supergirl movie is heavily inspired by the “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic, but it won’t be a direct copy. The biggest difference is the inclusion of Jason Momoa as Lobo, a character not featured in the original comic (though he was considered early on). While Supergirl will stay closer to its source material than something like Captain America: Civil War – which only borrowed the title and general idea from the comic – it won’t be a scene-for-scene recreation of Woman of Tomorrow either.
Good news for fans of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”! Even though director Tom Gillespie came to the story through the movie’s script, the film will still include many memorable moments from the original source material, but with his own unique style. Starring Milly Alcock as Supergirl, along with Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jason Momoa, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham, Supergirl is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. It’s the second film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe.
