“Superb” and “compelling” period crime drama being removed from Netflix soon

If you enjoy dark and realistic historical crime shows, you’ll want to watch Ripper Street soon! The series, featuring Matthew Macfadyen, is being removed from Netflix on March 26th after becoming available last year.

The story takes place in London’s East End in April 1889, six months after the final murder committed by Jack the Ripper. It centers on the police officers of the H Division as they work to maintain order in the 1.25 square mile area of Whitechapel.

The series revolves around Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, played by Macfadyen, a dedicated but troubled investigator still fixated on his inability to catch Jack the Ripper and grieving the loss of his daughter. He teams up with Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake, portrayed by Jerome Flynn, and Captain Homer Jackson, played by Adam Rothenberg – a surgeon and former Pinkerton detective who is hiding a troubling secret from his life in America.

Completing the main group of characters is Long Susan, played by MyAnna Buring, who runs a brothel and has a complex history with Jackson.

Each season of the show advances the timeline, spanning from 1889 to 1897. This allows viewers to see how the characters grow, evolve, and are affected by the changing, yet harsh, realities of Victorian London.

The show first aired on BBC One in the UK and features a new case each week. But these standalone episodes are woven together with ongoing stories about the characters’ personal lives.

The first season of the show premiered in 2012 to generally favorable reviews. The San Francisco Chronicle praised it, noting the excellent acting, high production quality, and surprisingly well-written scripts. They highlighted that the characters were realistically complex, possessing both strengths and weaknesses.

In a review, The Hollywood Reporter praised the lead actors’ “superb” performances and called Ripper Street a well-made, captivating mystery. They highlighted that the show is immediately engaging and doesn’t need time to find its footing, starting strong from the very beginning.

IGN praised the strong connection between the three lead actors, calling their performances excellent and their personal stories compelling enough to make viewers want to continue watching each week.

Despite occasionally being over-the-top, the show excels in its visuals, storytelling, and dramatic elements, according to a review in The Times.

In a review of the second season, The Independent pointed out the show’s dramatic flair, praising how Ripper Street consistently came up with fresh and disturbing crime stories. This, they noted, was thanks to the show’s unique blend of police procedural, historical costume drama, and the gritty setting of Victorian London’s East End.

Ripper Street is available to watch on Netflix until 26 March.
