Super Mario Movie Stars Pitch Duck Hunt Adaptation

Nintendo is having continued success bringing its video games to the big screen, with the latest film currently in theaters. Now, two actors from the recent sequel are hoping to team up again for a movie based on the classic game, Duck Hunt.

If you owned a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the 1980s, you probably played Duck Hunt. Often packaged with the original Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt was a common addition to new NES consoles, introducing millions to video games. It used a special light gun to let players shoot at pixelated ducks, and a hilarious dog would laugh if you missed!

It’s Time for Duck Hunt to Get a Movie

While promoting The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Jack Black (who voiced Bowser) and Donald Glover (Yoshi) jokingly suggested making a movie based on the classic Duck Hunt video game. They both expressed strong interest in starring in it if Nintendo ever decided to make it. Black enthusiastically volunteered to play the hunter, saying he’s ready to “go hunting ducks.”

Glover agreed, saying he’d play the dog, explaining he’s good at making fun of things and suggesting the other person should be the dog while he takes on the role of the hunter.

Originally a hugely popular game in the 1980s, Duck Hunt never received a direct sequel. However, it reappeared in 2014 on the Wii U Virtual Console, using the Wii Remote instead of the classic NES Zapper light gun. For releases on the 3DS and Wii U, the iconic laughing dog and a duck became playable characters, forming a fighting duo. They later made an appearance, along with a Duck Huntinspired stage, in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*.

Time Will Tell if Duck Hunt Gets an Adaptation

Nintendo is currently concentrating on the launch of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This film follows up on the success of 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned over $1.3 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing video game movie ever. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had a strong opening day, bringing in over $34 million – exceeding the $32 million earned by the previous film on its first day. This release is happening before another highly anticipated movie, which is expected to be a big success.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directed The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film stars Jack Black as Bowser and Donald Glover as Yoshi, and also features Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now playing in movie theaters.
