The animated movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now available to rent or buy digitally and has quickly become a hit on streaming services.
As of May 21, 2026, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the most popular movie to rent or buy on the Apple TV Store worldwide. It’s currently ahead of films like Project Hail Mary, The Housemaid, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Greenland 2: Migration, Nuremberg, Hoppers, The Devil Wears Prada, Shelter, and Top Gun: Maverick.
The popular movie is currently the number one film on Apple’s chart in a wide range of countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, and the United States.
In the U.S., The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently third most popular on Amazon’s on-demand streaming service, following Project Hail Mary. Other top 10 titles include The Housemaid, Shelter, Dracula, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Reminders of Him, and Scream 7.
The movie is also currently number 3 on Fandango at Home’s (previously Vudu) global streaming chart. It’s performing well, ranking behind Project Hail Mary but ahead of popular titles like The Martian, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Fast X, Independence Day: Resurgence, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Following its release in theaters on April 1st, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie quickly became a box office hit. As a follow-up to 2023’s hugely successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which earned $1.36 billion worldwide), it opened at number one and ultimately grossed $968 million during its time in cinemas.
Currently, Galaxy is the year’s biggest box office hit, but several other major movies scheduled for release later in 2026 could take the top spot. These include the video game adaptation Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July and Avengers: Doomsday in December.
While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has made a lot of money, critics haven’t loved it, giving it a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is lower than the 59% score given to the first Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, audiences have responded much more positively, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie earning a 95% audience score and Galaxy receiving an 88%.
The movie became available to rent or buy digitally on May 19th. You’ll be able to purchase the Blu-ray and DVD on June 16th. Later this year, it will also stream on Peacock, although we don’t have a specific date yet. Based on how the first movie was released, it will likely be available on Peacock in early August.
The new movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, features Bowser Jr. as the main villain who kidnaps Princess Rosalina. It brings back the original voice cast – including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Eric Bauza – and adds exciting new stars like Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, Brie Larson, Glen Powell, Luis Guzmán, and Issa Rae.
