The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has revealed another classic villain debut.
The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie has given fans their first glimpse of a famous villain who will appear in the new film. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will follow Mario and Luigi as they team up with Yoshi, Princess Peach, and Toad to prevent Bowser and Bowser Jr. from causing trouble, after Bowser Jr. helps his father escape from prison.
Nintendo just released a new poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie that gives us our first glimpse of Wart, a green toad character originally from Super Mario Bros. 2. This marks the first time this classic Mario villain will appear in the animated films, suggesting he’ll play a significant part in the story. You can see the poster below!
Wart originally appeared as a villain in the 1987 Nintendo game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. He later became the main enemy in Super Mario Bros. 2, where he tried to take over the dream world of Subcon with a special machine. However, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach (called Princess Toadstool at the time) managed to defeat him.
Since first appearing in the Mario games, Wart has shown up in other related media, like the Super Mario Bros. comic series from Valiant Comics and as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While it’s not yet known exactly what he’ll do, he seems like he’ll play a significant part in the upcoming Mario movie.
Wart is just one of several new characters—though many are familiar to players of Mario games—who will appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Bowser Jr., Yoshi, Birdo, and Princess Rosalina will also play significant roles, and it looks like the film will make good use of all these new additions.
Okay, let’s talk about Wart. He’s a fascinating character because he’s not just a Mario villain – he actually pops up in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening! Under the name Mamu, he lives in this little dream world and is surprisingly helpful. He’s a genuinely friendly guy who teaches Link a special song, “Frog’s Song of Soul,” if you’re willing to part with 300 Rupees. It’s a fun little cameo that shows just how versatile this character is.
Wart probably isn’t intended to directly link the worlds of Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Still, including him is a smart move, especially with Nintendo currently working on a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. It creates a fun connection between the two films, like an Easter egg, by featuring a villain fans will recognize.
