Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac uncovers sparkling water scam at restaurants – and it will infuriate you

It appears that Sam Mac is about to ruffle some feathers in the hospitality industry.

This week, the meteorologist who usually brings us sunrise updates transformed into an investigative reporter, exposing what he calls a “bubbly water scheme”.

Sam, 42, took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a clip that showed him dining alone at a restaurant.

His only companion in the clip was a one-litre bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling water.

The clip showed Sam looking crestfallen as he attempted to polish off the bottle solo.

In the caption of the video, Sam asserted that he was given a big water bottle against his will, even though smaller ones were accessible instead.

‘The waiter inquired whether I preferred still or fizzy water. I opted for the fizzy option, only to find myself the latest target of the #fizzbomb prank.’ (Sam wrote)

In the video, Sam struggled to empty the bottle, eventually confessing that he was doing it out of personal conviction.

‘Not today, bro,’ he added.

I’m going to finish that one-liter bottle of fizzy water, regardless of how it affects my bladder. It’s a matter of principle. Stand up for what you believe in. They know it comes in 250ml servings as well.

The camera moved to focus on Sam’s bill, revealing that the Italian water cost $12. After this, Sam repeated his hashtag, “#sparklinglife”.

‘This topic might not be widely popular… but does anyone else think there’s something fishy about the #SparklingScam?’

Sam’s brave journalism definitely resonated, as numerous followers expressed that they, too, had been duped by the fraudulent scheme.

‘Every time,’ one fan wrote. 

In France as well, a similar incident occurred. I picked up the bottle, but the waiter pursued me along the street, insisting on getting it back from me.

Another offered: ‘And then when they have it on tap, put it in a bottle and still charge you $12.’ 

A third added that they were behind Sam’s call with: ‘Omg this is my pet peeve!!!

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I find it quite bothersome when restaurants insist on quickly finishing and replacing bottles without even consulting me first. It’s a sneaky tactic that feels more like a scam than quality service.

Not only did that not conclude the situation, a spectator who was thirsty for more commented: ‘Quite audacious of them. It’s similar to asking “would you like a bag?” or “would you like some sauce?” They make it seem as if it’s a compliment, but in reality, it costs an additional 50 cents… lol.’

Sam’s water exposé comes after he divided fans after retuning to Sunrise in June with a new look.

In my recent break from the limelight, I decided to let my facial hair grow naturally. Upon my return, I unveiled this new addition – a beard – which I’m proudly sporting, shared with my loving fiancée Rebecca James and our delightful daughters, Margot (2) and Mabel (10 months).

Before returning to work, Sam posted a photo on social media, hinting at his fans that if the image of his fresh beard received sufficient likes, he would grow and keep it.

‘Should this picture receive 10,000 likes, I’ll continue growing my beard when I go back to @sunriseon7 on Monday, using the hashtag #DadLeaveBeard. In the photo, you can see me cradling our newest family member.’

However, it seemed many fans were not too pleased with the dad-of-two’s new look.

It’s great to have Sam Mac back, demonstrating once again why he’s tops in weather reporting. His new beard certainly adds a unique touch.

Another chimed in: ‘It’s horrid. Most guys with beards at least, tidy up their throat area.’

One individual harshly responded to his Instagram post: “I’m sorry, Sam, but I really can’t stand that beard. What does Bec feel about it?
