Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac uncovers sparking water scam at restaurants – and it will infuriate you

It appears that Sam Mac is about to ruffle some feathers in the hospitality industry.

This week, the weather forecaster shifted roles to become an investigative reporter, exposing what he calls a “bubbly water fraud”.

Sam, 42, took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a clip that showed him dining alone at a restaurant.

His only companion in the clip was a one-litre bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling water.

The clip showed Sam looking crestfallen as he attempted to polish off the bottle solo.

In the video’s description, Sam asserted that he was given a big water bottle unwillingly, even though smaller options were accessible.

‘The waiter inquired about my preference between still and sparkling water. I requested sparkling, only to find myself next in line for the #sparklingscam,’ Sam wrote.

In the video, it was shown that Sam struggled to empty the bottle. He confessed that he was doing this out of personal conviction or principle.

‘Not today, bro,’ he added.

I’m going to finish off this one-liter bottle of fizzy water, despite my bladder’s protests. It’s a matter of principle. Standing up against the flow. They know it comes in 250ml bottles as well.

Sam’s caption for the video reads, ‘I think this could be quite specific… does it seem like anyone else is onto the Sparkling Scam?’

Sam’s fearless journalism resonated deeply with many of his followers, as numerous individuals shared their own experiences of being tricked by the same scam.

‘Every time,’ one fan wrote.

In France as well, a similar incident transpired, and I ended up taking the bottle along. The waiter then pursued me all the way down the street, insisting that I return it to him.

Another offered: ‘And then when they have it on tap, put it in a bottle and still charge you $12.’

A third added that they were behind Sam’s call with: ‘Omg this is my pet peeve!!!

Indeed, I find myself often irked by dining establishments that seem to have a knack for swiftly refilling my glass from a nearly empty bottle, without even bothering to check if I’d like more. This practice, in my opinion, is a subtle trick, as it appears they are attempting to finish the bottle quickly and replace it, all without seeking your consent.

Not only did that not conclude the situation, a spectator with a dry mouth commented humorously: ‘That was quite sly of them. It’s just like asking “would you like a bag?” or “would you like some sauce?” – it seems friendly but eventually costs 50 cents extra… lol.’

Sam’s water exposé comes after he divided fans after retuning to Sunrise in June with a new look.

The well-known host, who is partnered with Rebecca James and has a 2-year-old named Margot and a 10-month-old named Mabel, sported a new beard after taking a month off from the show.

Before stepping back into the spotlight, I, an overly enthusiastic fan, shared a photo of Sam’s fresh new beard on social media, promising the world that if this snapshot garnered enough likes, he would sport it permanently.

If this picture garners 10,000 likes, he’s planning to keep his beard when he returns to @sunriseon7 on Monday, as he mentioned in his post featuring him with his newborn baby. #DadLeaveBeard

However, it seemed many fans were not too pleased with the dad-of-two’s new look.

‘It’s great to have Sam Mac back, demonstrating once more why he stands out in weather broadcasting. His new beard certainly adds a unique touch,’ someone posted on a Sunrise discussion board.

Another chimed in: ‘It’s horrid. Most guys with beards at least, tidy up their throat area.’

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to address a comment that was made about my recent Instagram post regarding my beard. A certain individual seemed to take issue with it, expressing strong displeasure. However, I’m more concerned with the opinions of people who truly matter, such as Bec. So, Bec, what are your thoughts on my beard?
