Sum 41 star Deryck Whibley breaks silence after ex-manager Greig Nori denied sexually abusing him

As I delve deeper into this heart-wrenching tale of Deryck Whibley, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration for his resilience and courage. The journey he’s been on, grappling with the ghosts of his past while navigating the complexities of his present, is nothing short of inspiring.

After remaining quiet for some time, Deryck Whibley has responded following his former manager Greig Nori’s denial of allegations that he had sexually abused him since Whibley was still a teenager.

In a recent memoir titled “Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Hell,” the lead singer of Sum 41, who initially brought forth these accusations, claims that he was inappropriately groomed, controlled, and sexually exploited by Nori (age 62), the frontman of the Canadian punk band Treble Charger. This alleged abuse started when the accuser was only 18 years old, with Nori being 36 at the time.

At the tail end of the 1990s, Whibley started working with Nori, who was the band’s initial music manager when he was just 16. He asserted that Nori persuaded him to use drugs prior to abusing him for the first time, which happened in a restroom during a rave event.

Last week, Nori countered the accusations by issuing a statement, stating that their relationship was consensual with Whibley. Now, Whibley is urging Nori to file a lawsuit against him and reaffirming his assertions.

In a heartfelt video on social media named ‘It seems things have come to this…’ Whibley expressed: ‘I’ll try to make this short, the past week has been incredibly tough for me.’

I’m glad I spoke up about my experience with my former manager, as bottling it up any longer wasn’t an option for me – I simply needed to express what had been weighing on me.

It appears that Greig Nori has accused me of lying. Let me make this clear: I wholeheartedly support every statement in my book, 100%. I’m not a person who lies.

If you have doubts about my honesty, we can clear this up officially. I’m open to discussing our concerns in a courtroom, under oath, with a judge and jury present, at a time that suits you best. I stand ready whenever you decide.

I simply wanted to express my gratitude to each of you for your love and encouragement. To my bandmates, my family; to our loyal fans, thank you for your unwavering support. I value every bit of it, and together, we’ll navigate through this as we have all other challenges.

Nori stated to the Toronto Star on Thursday that it was Whibley who started their relationship, but he emphasized that there was no inappropriate behavior involved.

“It’s not true that I started the relationship; rather, it was Whibley who initiated it, quite forcefully.

Nori clarified that he did not engage in “grooming” with Whibley, emphasizing that when their relationship started, both him and Whibley were adults.

‘It’s untrue that I forced Whibley to keep our romantic relationship going. Also, it’s untrue that I tried to make him stay by accusing him of being homophobic. The truth is, the relationship naturally ended on its own. It was a mutual decision and we continued to work together professionally.’

In the late ’90s, when Whibley was just 16 years old, he started working with Nori, who served as the band’s first music manager. According to his recently published memoir, Nori suggested that Whibley try drugs and later, for the first time, abused him in a restroom during a rave event.

According to excerpts from the Los Angeles Times, Whibley states that Greig demanded to be our manager under one condition: complete authority. He insisted that we could only communicate with him, as he perceived the music industry as a place filled with deceitful and manipulative individuals, and he was the only individual we felt we could rely on.

At the age of 18, while under the influence at a rave, the musician claims Nori invited him to the restroom to take another dose of ecstasy.

He asserts that Nori subsequently put her lips on him forcefully and passionately, leaving him taken aback, while Whibley looked on in astonishment.

He states that he had never considered Nori in that way and asserts that Nori mentioned this to him. While Whibley had never felt same-sex attraction prior, their unique connection drew it out of him, making it a very special experience.

Over time, his persistence and persuasiveness led me to consider the possibility that perhaps he might be correct. (Whibley)

Whibley’s book suggests that as the weeks passed, Nori seemingly attempted to persuade him to delve into their relationship, reasoning, “Many of my musical heroes were queer, and I believe that most people are bisexual, they just lack the courage to acknowledge it.

With increasing fame, Sum 41 found themselves touring more frequently. Frontman Deryck Whibley seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as the miles between him and Nori (his daughter) grew wider.

Upon returning to Ajax, Ontario, Whibley asserted that he endeavored to terminate the physical aspect of his relationship with Nori because he identified himself as heterosexual rather than gay or bisexual.

According to the book, Nori allegedly accused Whibley of being homophobic after their interaction, and he provided arguments as to why he believed Whibley owed him for his success in the music industry.

He writes: ‘He told me this was all my fault to begin with because I should never have said yes to it in the first place. I started this and now he was in it with me so I couldn’t just stop.’

In his book, it’s stated that Nori eventually ceased instigating intimate moments with him, following the revelation of their situation to a shared acquaintance. This anonymous friend then informed both parties that their relationship was characterized as abusive.

Initially, Whibley was awestruck by Nori; their first encounter took place when Whibley secretly went backstage during a Treble Charger concert and subsequently invited him to one of the early Sum 41 shows.

In no time, Nori shared his contact details with the rising artist, leading to lengthy phone conversations between them. It is also claimed that before he was of legal age, Whibley and his bandmate Steve Jocz were bought shots of Goldschläger by Nori.

Whibley candidly discusses his struggle with alcohol dependency, a battle that began following the 2001 launch of their album, All Killer, No Filler. For over a decade, he found solace in excessive drinking during his constant tours.

He asserts that Nori restricted the frequency at which the band members could communicate with their parents, stating to The Times: “He constantly kept them isolated. This now becomes clearer. As it turns out, he was around the same age as our parents, and we were unaware of this fact at the time. He understood that they might grow suspicious about how things were being managed. … He would often say, ‘You can’t maintain a relationship with your parents while being in a rock band. It’s not trendy. It will harm your career.’

After the end of their sexual relationship, Nori started verbally and psychologically mistreating Whibley.

In my expertise, I can confidently say that he alleged that Nori would swing between complimenting and criticizing me, and fuel the rest of the band’s discontent towards me by insinuating that my romance with Avril Lavigne had transformed me into a ‘Hollywood type.’

The musician behind “In Too Deep” revealed that he never disclosed the accusations of sexual abuse to anyone, not even his band members, but did share this secret with his former spouse, Avril, during their marriage from 2006 to 2010.

When informed about the alleged misconduct, Lavigne expressed shock by saying, “That’s abuse!”, and her wife, Ariana Cooper, echoed this sentiment in agreement.

According to Whibley, Nori, who contributed to composing several of the band’s songs, often demanded co-writing credits on many of their tracks. He believed that the music industry would regard them with greater respect if his name were listed as a collaborator on these pieces.

2018 saw Whibley filing a lawsuit against Nori, claiming that Nori had unjustly taken some of Whibley’s profitable songwriting rights. However, the outcome was in Whibley’s favor as he regained his portion of the songwriting royalties from the band’s publishing deals.

According to Whibley’s account, he advocated for dismissing Nori due to poor time management and an alleged appearance at a band performance under the influence of ecstasy; however, the band opted against it.

Whibley shared with Rolling Stone the reason behind his decision to disclose the alleged abuse for the first time: “I had always thought that I would keep this secret buried and never speak of it. But as I began working on my book, I felt compelled to be truthful.

For a considerable stretch, I stopped contemplating the matter. Eventually, I recognized that my avoidance was essentially self-protection. In retrospect, I chose not to dwell on it and suppress any feelings of being a survivor rather than a victim. I didn’t want to be burdened with ‘victim issues.’

To this very moment, Whibley refrains from labeling the reported events as “abuse” within his memoir, instead stating that he is still in the initial phases of working through them.

For the first time, I’m encountering this situation and I’m still figuring out my feelings towards it. It was undeniably manipulative, but at the time, I didn’t fully grasp the extent of it all. It wasn’t until I reached his age, in his mid-30s, when I was a teenager, that I truly understood the power dynamic and how one could exploit a 16-year-old. He was idolized as a hero, so it’s eye-opening to see that aspect now.

He claims he decided to disclose the suspected mistreatment following Ariana, his co-parent, openly discussing a previous suicide attempt in their shared 2021 interview. He felt compelled to speak out because of the significance of being transparent.

I’ve just received a copy of Whibley’s upcoming memoir, due out next Tuesday. I can’t help but feel a pang as I read it – he’s become something of an enigma among us. A silent subject, if you will. We’ve all steered clear of discussing him, collectively choosing to let the past rest.

Previously, it was disclosed that Sum 41 were planning to disband following the release and tour of their final studio album last year.

Since 1996, being part of Sum 41 has given us some of our most cherished memories. We’re eternally thankful to both our long-time fans and those who have recently joined us – your support has been instrumental at every step. It’s challenging to express the depth of our affection and admiration for each one of you, which is why we wanted to express this gratitude directly from us to you first.

Excitingly, we plan to release our last album titled “Heaven :x: Hell” and organize a global headlining tour as a farewell celebration. Further details about these events will be shared once they are finalized.

The group, comprising Dave Baksh, Jason McCaslin, Tom Thacker, and Frank Zummo concluded their message expressing their anticipation towards the future, stating “We’re thrilled about what lies ahead for each of us. Thank you for the past 27 years with Sum 41.

Sum 41’s final show is scheduled for November. 23, 2024, in Nanterre, France
