Suits LA Episode 9 Shines Bright But Sets Up a Disappointing Season Finale
Caution: This post reveals spoilers for Suits LA Episode 9, which marks the close of its first season. Despite some imperfections, Episode 9 stands out as one of the strongest episodes in the season. Following significant developments in the previous episode, Episode 9 propels the series forward significantly, setting the stage for the season finale. Remarkably, many of the secrets and key plot points the show has been gradually unveiling throughout the season are revealed in this episode, even though there are still four episodes left before the season concludes. However, the timelines and pace can feel a bit peculiar at times. Nevertheless, Episode 9 is one of the best episodes so far in the season.
Harvey Specter and Ted Black journey to New York City to tackle an issue they had hoped wouldn’t resurface. Simultaneously, in Los Angeles, Stuart Lane grapples with a client he finds hard to believe, while Erica and Rick’s relationship continues to flourish. To add complexity, the episode incorporates several flashbacks, setting the stage for the upcoming finale by gradually revealing key details.
Suits LA Is Still Disorganized, But Episode 9 Is A Lot Of Fun
During the first season of Suits LA, it has relied heavily on flashbacks and weaving a narrative that spans across two distinct time periods. The series also dedicated much of its early episodes to establishing various storylines. As the season approaches its conclusion, it seems to be hastily resolving these storylines, which leaves fewer unraveled mysteries or ongoing plots as the finale draws near.
Episode 9 offers an abundance of enjoyment as Harvey takes center stage, adding a touch of the original show’s flair to it. Notably, this episode features some of Harvey’s most significant appearances, making him the standout character. Additionally, Ted Black engages in his finest exchanges of the season, and several key storylines from this season reach their conclusion.
Even though Harvey seems to shine brightly in his relatively small role, it could be a warning sign for the future, as the new series, “Suits LA,” and its characters haven’t quite managed to capture the captivating allure that Gabriel Macht’s character exuded. While this episode was enjoyable, it falls short of the charm and charisma that I’ve come to expect from Harvey in the original series.
Indeed, there’s a strong possibility that the upcoming episodes could offer something exceptional, potentially reversing the current situation. However, the disarray and confusion in the episodes leading up to the finale have been quite disappointing. Creating a successful spin-off was never going to be easy, and Suits LA has had almost an entire season to address its flaws. Having Harvey appear in this episode, I’m worried it might have underscored just how superior the original cast was compared to their substitutes.
Suits LA Is Missing So Much More Than Just Good Characters
The series has unveiled certain key enigmas and concealed truths, which have exposed the tenuous nature of its overall narrative. Instead of expanding on this singular theme throughout the season or making it the foundation, the mystery was initially presented, subtly suggested through occasional flashbacks, and then largely disregarded. While doing so, the show seemed to focus on irrelevant subplots and wrapped up all conflicts in a single episode.
At present, the series appears to be lacking structure, four episodes prior to its conclusion. As various plot points are being resolved, I can’t help but feel that the show is running out of steam and seems directionless. If this ambiguity was purposeful, it appears to be a case of poor foresight. If, on the other hand, there is a coherent plan yet to unfold, it’s disheartening not to see it clearly taking shape.
Although Suits LA episode 9 was strong and entertaining, I had hoped it would offer a glimmer of what the show could evolve into in future seasons, yet it seemed to lack the excitement it once held. Unfortunately, despite its humor, it failed to deliver the anticipation or cliffhanger that I’d expect from an episode, especially not being a season finale.
New episodes of Suits LA air each Sunday at 9pm ET on NBC.
