Suits LA
In Episode 9 of Suits LA, titled “Bat Signal,” Gabriel Macht reappears as Harvey Specter for the last time this season. The storyline seems to conclude Ted’s legal battle against New York mob boss John Pellegrini, while Stuart’s case with his new client, David Bowie, becomes increasingly complex. The episode features fewer scenes involving Rick and Erica, as “Bat Signal” primarily delves into criminal law matters. With Harvey Specter and Daniel Hardman both making appearances, the episode has a stronger Suits feel compared to Suits LA.
Ted and Harvey Take Down Eddie’s Killer
In the opening of Episode 9, I was still wrapping up my case against Pellegrini, though it seemed like the trial had concluded in Episode 8. I summoned Daniel Hardman to the stand, a character you might recognize from Suits, played by David Costabile. I asked Daniel to examine a pile of financial documents, which served as evidence that his client, John Pellegrini, was involved in money laundering. The jury found Pellegrini guilty on all counts. However, just as the judge was about to sentence Pellegrini, surprise! Pellegrini’s legal team called Harvey Specter to testify. In a moment of truth, Harvey had no choice but to admit under oath that I had obtained the financial records illegally. This revelation forced the judge to drop racketeering charges against Pellegrini and handed down a sentence with the possibility of parole.
Recently, news broke that Pellegrini has been granted parole in today’s world. As ardent admirers of justice, my partner Harvey and I find ourselves embarking on a journey from the sunny shores of Los Angeles to the bustling cityscapes of New York. Our mission is simple yet profound: to ensure that Pellegrini once again sees the inside of a prison cell.
The inspiration for our strategy, as Harvey puts it, stems from the gripping tale depicted in “Mississippi Burning.” After witnessing Pellegrini’s release, we turn to an acquaintance named Kevin, who hints at one of Pellegrini’s associates, Vinnie Santoro, as a potential ally.
In our pursuit, I make contact with Vinnie and present him with a proposition: if he can provide evidence demonstrating that Pellegrini is already back in control, I can guarantee his safety. However, Vinnie remains resistant to our proposal, adding another layer of intrigue to our mission.
In a later scene, Ted and Harvey return to the bar from Episode 4, where they recall memories of Eddie. Simultaneously, Ted receives a text from Kevin, prompting him to step outside, while Harvey gets a message from someone labeled “My boy” and referred to as “Daddy.” Outside the bar, an ominous encounter ensues as Ted is abducted by Pellegrini into a van, who menaces Ted with threats of his life. Pellegrini also reveals that Vinnie Santoro was the one who murdered Eddie, but this critical detail is swiftly brushed aside in the episode. Despite Ted’s assertion that he has the FBI on standby and challenging Pellegrini to carry out his threat, the latter chooses not to. Upon escaping from the van, Ted discovers Kevin has snapped photos of him conversing with Vinnie and Pellegrini, which they intend to exploit for blackmail purposes.
Eventually, Vinnie consents to aid Ted. Subsequently, Ted visits his former supervisor at the D.A.’s office, confessing his errors in the initial Pellegrini case. He provides an affidavit, sworn by Vinnie, which could imprison Pellegrini, thereby persuading his boss to grant Vinnie immunity. Overjoyed, Ted and Harvey head to a diner for celebration. There, Harvey reveals he has a son. As Harvey departs, Eddie’s spirit emerges, instructing Ted that there is one more task left undone. Ted manages to persuade Kevin to rejoin him in Los Angeles.
Stuart Tries To Save David Bowie
In Episode 8, Stuart is worried due to an article implying that his client, David Bowie (not the famous one), might have murdered a studio informant. The Assistant District Attorney, Isaac Adani, arrives at Stuart’s office to announce that the case has escalated into a homicide investigation. Stuart directly confronts David Bowie about this, but initially, his alibi seems shaky. It is later revealed that David Bowie was actually breaking into a producer’s house at the time of the whistleblower’s death, providing an explanation for his absence.
In a different phrasing, here’s how it goes: Stuart approaches Rick for aid in convincing Erica, who stands as Greg Fisher’s representative, to cooperate. However, Erica has conditions; she remains tight-lipped about what they are, but Stuart is aware of the demands. Stuart secretly fulfills her requirements and manages to capture security footage showing his client entering Greg Fisher’s residence. Despite some reservations about his client, Stuart finds reassurance when David Bowie reappears, offering a list of everyone who hired him. He claims these individuals would testify that he wouldn’t resort to murder.
In the grand unfolding of the episode, several puzzles were neatly tied up in a brief conversation between me and Erica. She shared that she retrieved her mother’s sculpture from Stuart, who had snatched it when she was a budding lawyer. Rick also brought up an intriguing tidbit, how David Bowie allegedly swiped a sex tape from Greg Fisher’s residence. Curiously, he inquired if I still possessed our own ‘special’ tape – indeed, I do.
It turns out that not every situation can be neatly resolved, as Isaac reappears at Stuart’s office to disclose an unexpected detail: Traces of David Bowie’s DNA were found on the whistleblower’s vehicle. Concerned for his friend, Stuart advises against arresting their client, as he possesses evidence that could make Isaac appear foolish. However, Isaac informs Stuart that it’s already too late, as they have already apprehended David Bowie.
Objection, Episode 9 Feels Irrelevant
In the ninth episode of “Suits LA,” the storyline deviated from its original premise as a series about entertainment law, focusing instead on criminal law. Although David Bowie’s case involved people in the entertainment industry, they were not depicted on-screen. The main characters, Rick and Erica, who are Heads of Entertainment at their respective firms, had minimal screen presence.
It’s quite disheartening that the unique charm of Suits LA, which lay in its focus on entertainment law, has been somewhat overshadowed. Episodes like “Bat Signal” are particularly disappointing because the criminal cases often take a grim turn. Characters like Ted and Stuart frequently resort to questionable tactics to achieve their desired outcomes, and this season has shown Ted hiding clients, hiring impersonators as witnesses, illegally obtaining records, among other rule-breaking behaviors. Given our current times when faith in the justice system’s ability to safeguard the innocent is already shaky, it’s frustrating to see TV lawyers consistently bending or breaking the rules so frequently.
As Ted invites Kevin back to Los Angeles and concludes the Pellegrini case, he can resume working with clients in the entertainment industry. The storyline for Harvey has reached its conclusion in the ninth episode of this season. With no news about renewal yet, the show might need a significant event to rekindle viewer interest.
In case you were wondering, the upcoming episode of “Suits LA” is set to air on NBC on April 27th at 9:00 PM. If streaming is more your thing, you’ll find it on Peacock as well!
