Succession’s Jeremy Strong reveals playing Kendall Roy had devastating impact on his life: ‘It f***ed me up’
As a dedicated follower of the entertainment industry and a mental health advocate, I can empathize with Jeremy Strong’s emotional journey as he played Kendall Roy in Succession. His portrayal was captivating and intense, but it seems that the method acting took a toll on his well-being. It is crucial for artists to prioritize their mental health, especially when they are pouring so much of themselves into their craft.
Jeremy Strong disclosed that portraying Kendall Roy took a concerning toll on his psychological wellbeing over the long term.
In a moment of introspection, the 45-year-old actor shared that there were instances when he felt disconnected from the sense of joy during his portrayal of the character in the award-winning show Succession.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, he confessed that the experience left him deeply affected. He went on to say that he no longer yearns for those times.
After transitioning out of the role, the Golden Globe recipient, who earlier faced criticism from his on-screen father, Brian Cox, due to his persistent method acting, now reports feeling ‘happiness’ once more in his life.
‘I went on a silent meditation retreat last week,’ he continued. ‘I really needed it.’
He explained: ‘There’s so much noise and busyness now. I have opportunities that I only ever imagined.’
Strong also shared how healing the silent retreat was to his life and well-being.
‘I’ve rediscovered play,’ he said. ‘I sometimes lost touch with joy.’
The highly committed actor, renowned for his dedication to method acting, had found himself deeply affected in the past by his portrayal of Kendall, the troubled outcast within the powerful Roy family.
During his chat, he admitted how relieved he was to leave the role and the show behind.
Instead of letting go of his role like his fellow actors did when off-set or away from the camera, he consistently embodied Kendall both on and off the screen.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve found myself compelled to share my thoughts on a chilling revelation. Previously, I confessed to a media outlet that I would conjure up distressing scenarios in my own life as a means to psychologically prepare for my role. Little did I know, this method of preparation would eventually take a heavy toll on my mental well-being.
Currently, he mentioned that although Succession was a blessing, he’s content not to shoulder Kendall’s struggles any longer and doesn’t pine for those times.
Strong expressed his feelings about Succession by saying, “That series was an immeasurable blessing for me,” he commented upon wrapping up his character. “The content was like a feast. Now, I truly miss it.
He continued: ‘But Kendall’s struggle was difficult to carry for seven years. And there’s just so much more I want to do.’
When asked if he’d play the role again for a potential spin-off, he flatly refused.
He stated, “I no longer feel inclined to continue with it,” and added, “While it was a significant part of my life, I don’t pine for it anymore.
In his interview, he also spoke about his latest role in the controversial new film, The Apprentice.
Strong discussed his role portraying Roy Cohn, a ruthless, ethically questionable lawyer who was a mentor to Donald Trump.
Following Steven Cheung, Trump’s 2024 campaign representative, labeling the biopic as ‘a malicious slander fit for a trash fire,’ Strong responded by finding it amusing.
‘Because it’s exactly what Roy would have counseled them to do,’ he explained.
Approach aggressively, always deny any wrongdoing, and never concede loss. Their strategy revolves around spreading false information. Without even watching the movie, they speculated it might be harmful. However, there’s nothing in it that Donald Trump himself hasn’t boasted or celebrated about.
The Apprentice is now in theaters after premiering on Friday, October 11.
