Succession’s Brian Cox SLAMS the Oscars as ‘absolute nonsense’ after he was snubbed for nomination
As a dedicated follower of the arts and politics, I find myself deeply moved by the experiences and opinions of Brian Cox, the talented Scottish actor who has graced our screens for decades. His latest statement about the Oscars as “absolute nonsense” resonates with me not just because of his snubbed nomination for Churchill, but also due to my own experiences in the industry.
Actor Brian Cox from Succession criticized the Oscars, calling them ‘utterly ridiculous’, following his omission from the list of nominees.
In the 2017 movie Churchill, the renowned Scottish actor, aged 78 at the time, portrayed Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister, yet he missed out on being nominated for Best Actor.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my personal perspective on the acting arena. Contrasting my viewpoint with that of Gary Oldman, who clinched the Best Actor Oscar in 2017 for his role as the British politician in Darkest Hour, I must admit my own performance, which I hold dear, felt superior to me, even though it wasn’t recognized in the same way.
He told THR: ‘Our film came out in the summer, and it was a relatively independent film, so you haven’t got the power of the studios behind it. The Oscars are absolute nonsense because everything that’s judged in the Oscars, it’s not a year’s work. It’s just the work that comes out between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
‘In truth, I believe those awards are questionable because there’s a vast amount of excellent work happening beyond what is categorized as the “Oscar season.” My film was overlooked entirely, yet I firmly believe my performance surpasses many recognized ones.’
Cox, who is a classically trained Shakespearean actor, has never landed an Oscar nomination but has won an Emmy for 2001’s Nuremberg and a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for his portrayal of Logan Roy on Succession.
Offscreen the outspoken star is known for his headline-grabbing rants.
In an extremely critical interview, he labeled the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as a formidable or fearsome figure (i.e., a monster) in November.
In response to being queried about his feelings regarding the impending outcomes of the race during Channel 4’s U.S. election broadcast, Cox expressed that he was “extremely unpredictable… utterly irrational” and harbored aspirations to become an autocrat.
Additionally, he engaged in a heated exchange of words with the ex-Prime Minister of Britain, Boris Johnson, concerning Donald Trump’s speech and his potential actions regarding his promises.
In simple terms, Cox stated, “This is arguably the most important election I’ve ever experienced, and it’s essential that he [Donald Trump] does not win. He’s not just a problem; he’s more like a beast.
‘He’s crazy, he’s insane, he wants to be a dictator. It’s all been so clear, I don’t know why the American people aren’t listening. Some of the American people are, but a lot of the American people aren’t.
I can’t help but express my concern about his recent statements. It seems to me that he’s veering off course… almost as if he’s lost touch with reality. His behavior and words lead me to question his mental stability, and I believe it has been a concern for quite some time now. A position as president of the United States requires a level of sanity and sound judgment that I fear he may not possess.
“He’s not trustworthy; he has a criminal record, which leaves me shocked. As a former Catholic, I was surprised to learn that he has significant backing from Catholic voters. It’s hard for me to comprehend, Catholic voters supporting someone with such a questionable moral standing.
‘I find it all depressing and curiously ridiculous.’
Responding to queries regarding the extent of Trump’s bold statements materializing, he laughed and replied, “Trump will act according to his own interests. His goal isn’t necessarily about making America great again.
‘The man is completely self-serving, he is only interested in one thing, and that’s Donald Trump.
‘He doesn’t give a damn about America. He really doesn’t.’
Later, Cox found himself in a dispute with the ex-Prime Minister of Britain, Boris Johnson, who suggested that Trump might alter his opinions regarding Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky upon moving into the Oval Office.
