Subnautica 2’s Release Plans Could Alienate Its Biggest Fans!
It appears that Subnautica 2, scheduled for release this year, is making an oversight in its launch strategy, according to developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment. As a follow-up to the popular Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, the game continues the franchise’s distinct approach to survival horror. In these games, players find themselves in the midst of an enormous watery expanse on an alien planet, where they must not only endure but also unravel the mysterious narrative as they progress.
The forthcoming game, titled Subnautica 2, will carry forward the narrative on a freshly designed planet using Unreal Engine 5. This translates to fans immersing themselves in the thrill of underwater expeditions, with unexplored biomes and ominous creatures lurking beneath the waves, showcased in stunning high-definition graphics. However, there’s an issue that might disappoint some enthusiasts of the original game: Subnautica 2 may not be available on PlayStation consoles at its launch.
Subnautica 2 Is Making The Mistake Of Overlooking Part Of Its Fanbase
PlayStation Fans Are Left Out Of The Game’s Launch
With great anticipation, it’s the team-based multiplayer feature of the upcoming game that particularly excites me as a devoted fan of the original. For the very first time, this game will enable up to four players to join forces and collaborate, potentially allowing my husband and I to share the exhilarating underwater expeditions for supplies and escaping the relentless Leviathans concurrently, instead of merely observing each other struggle during our previous two gaming sessions.
It appears that Subnautica 2 might not be available on the PlayStation 5, which is unfortunate because we usually play our cooperative games there, and as enthusiasts of the series (including my husband and I), we had anticipated playing it together on the same console.
Unfortunately, there’s a deeper issue with Subnautica 2: it will only support online multiplayer, not split-screen. While my gaming laptop can handle the game, my husband’s old work Dell might struggle. As a result, we won’t be able to play on the same console as its predecessor and we also miss out on the online multiplayer feature that we were excited about.
Over the past year, Microsoft and Sony have been working towards eliminating console exclusivity, making games like “Doom: The Dark Ages” available on both Xbox and PlayStation. It seems unusual if Unknown Worlds is opting not to release their new game on PlayStation, given that “Subnautica” and its sequel “Subnautica: Below Zero” are already available there. Logically speaking, it would be more consistent for the upcoming game to also be released on PlayStation consoles.
PlayStation Players May Still Get To Play Subnautica 2
They Might Just Have To Wait A While
For enthusiasts of the underwater adventure game, Subnautica, there’s a glimmer of anticipation as they dream of playing it on their PlayStation consoles. Though the developer hasn’t made an official announcement, there’s a chance that Subnautica 2 could be available on the PS5 (perhaps even the PS4) once it officially goes live.
Currently, the game is gearing up to debut in Early Access on both PC and Xbox Series X|S. This stage enables Unknown Worlds Entertainment to collect player data and suggestions for enhancements, prior to launching it as a fully-fledged game for all. Since Sony typically doesn’t support Early Access games on its consoles, many titles have to hold off until their complete release before they can transition onto one of Sony’s platforms.
In essence, the first installment of Subnautica followed a similar pattern. Released in Early Access in December 2014, it didn’t arrive on PS4 until December 2018, which was two whole years later. This time, however, the developers at Unknown Worlds have mentioned that the Early Access phase won’t be as prolonged this time around, with the complete game expected to launch sometime in 2025.
In the best-case scenario, this implies that my spouse and I, along with thousands of other fans of the Subnautica series who own PlayStations, will get to play the game this year. On the flip side, it might be that we’ll only be able to watch enviously as those without a PS5 get to enjoy the game, possibly for quite some time before we can explore Subnautica 2 on our platform. I’m optimistic that it will be the former, but it’s challenging to predict at this point whether PlayStation has been overlooked again or if we’re merely latecomers to the underwater gathering.
