Each year, Studio Ghibli releases special New Year’s decorations to help anime lovers start the year with positivity and good luck. For 2026, their online store is bringing back a popular item from last year, based on their beloved 1989 fantasy film.
Ghibli has released a new yellow version of its popular Jiji ornament, available through the studio’s online store. While described as “Western-style,” the ornament’s design is actually inspired by a traditional Japanese Shinto item – a “Shimenawa rope,” which is used for warding and protection. The ornament features the beloved black cat Jiji sitting within the loop of the rope, and is decorated with delicate bunches of yellow and purple dried flowers for an elegant touch. The rope is designed to be hung on a wall or over a doorway.
Studio Ghibli Prepares for 2026 With New Kiki Home Decor for a Lucky New Year
Jiji is Kiki’s beloved black cat and constant companion during her year of magical training. He’s a loyal friend, though sometimes a bit sarcastic and prone to making pessimistic comments. Throughout Kiki’s delivery work in Koriko village, Jiji is always by her side. In the English dub produced by Disney, the voice of Jiji is provided by Phil Hartman, known for his work on Saturday Night Live.
Last year, Donguri Sora launched a special collection of decorations inspired by the classic 1988 film, My Neighbor Totoro. A standout piece was a “Kagami mochi” Totoro figure, cleverly using a small white Totoro to represent the traditional Japanese New Year’s rice cakes. Fans could also buy a Totoro-themed door wreath designed like a shimenawa, decorated with figures of Totoro, Catbus, and the soot sprites.
The new Jiji shimenawa decoration for 2025 shows the talking cat in a pose that’s a little different from the most recent version. It also has pink and yellow flowers instead of purple and yellow. Both decorations cost the same: 6,050 yen, which is about $38.73.
I absolutely adore Kiki’s Delivery Service! It’s a beautiful story created by . It’s based on a wonderful fantasy novel by Eiko Kadono, and the premise is so charming: young witches have to strike out on their own for a year to really hone their skills. The movie follows 13-year-old Kiki as she bravely sets off on her mom’s broomstick with her talking cat, Jiji, a radio, and just a little bit of spending money. It’s such a sweet and magical beginning to her journey!
When Kiki arrives in the lively coastal town of Koriko, a friendly baker offers her a place to stay if she helps out at the bakery. Kiki uses her only magical skill – flying – to start a delivery service. Through her experiences, she learns to be independent, patient, and find creative solutions to problems.
Donguri Sora doesn’t ship internationally, but you can find their products through retailers like Meccha Japan, Neokyo, and Sugoi Mart. As for Studio Ghibli films, they’re available on streaming services like Max or Netflix, depending on where you live.
