Studio Ghibli Launches Rare Porco Rosso Sake Set for Father’s Day
1992 saw the introduction of a unique fantasy film titled “Porco Rosso,” conceived by the globally acclaimed anime director Hayao Miyazaki. Now, more than three decades later, the official Ghibli store is honoring this classic movie by reintroducing a line of popular items themed around Porco.
After its initial launch in May 2018, Donguri Sora has made a comeback on their official website. The distinctive sake cup within the set is designed to resemble Porco Rosso himself. The accompanying bottle mirrors one from the movie and showcases an image of the Savoia S.21 – the iconic red seaplane used by Porco for travel. According to Donguri Sora’s site, the label on this bottle carries the film’s tagline, “This is what it means to be cool,” in Italian. It’s worth mentioning that this sake set is part of their “Father’s Day” gift options. The price for this unique set is around 4,950 yen (equivalent to approximately US$34.68).

Drawing inspiration from an idea presented in “Porco Rosso“, the story unfolds in the picturesque Adriatic region during World War I-era Europe. Former Italian military pilot Marco Rossolini, who has been transformed into a pig-like creature by a peculiar curse, now spends his days battling pirate bands. In between these pursuits, he occasionally visits his charming companion, Gina. Porco, who perceives the curse as a remnant of his troubled past, does not anticipate it to be lifted anytime soon.
Porco’s real journey commences when an esteemed American race pilot named Donald Curtis issues him a challenge. Trying to flee the nation, Porco’s seaplane gets struck down by gunfire. In order to fix it, he is forced to go back to Italy. Upon returning to the Adriatic, Curtis confronts Porco; however, upon seeing Fio, Curtis instantly falls in love and proposes marriage if Porco loses their duel. Desiring to shield Fio from Curtis’ affection, Porco takes flight again. Although this story has a humorous tone, it subtly conveys themes about fascism and survivor’s guilt, which are not as prominent in other Ghibli films known for their wide recognition.
In 2005, The Walt Disney Company made the animated film “Porco Rosso” available on DVD and for home viewing. This release included performances by Michael Keaton, Cary Elwes, and Susan Egan, which contributed to its increased recognition among Western audiences. Fast forward to 2023, GKIDS added “Porco Rosso” to their US theatrical schedule for Studio Ghibli Fest, showcasing it alongside popular titles like “Spirited Away” (2001), “Princess Mononoke” (1997), “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988), and “Kiki’s Delivery Service” (1989).
Currently, Donguri Sora doesn’t ship its products overseas directly. However, you can easily purchase their items from international online retailers like Neokyo, Meccha Japan, and Sugoi Mart, among others. As for “Porco Rosso”, depending on your location, you can stream it on Max or Netflix at the moment.
