Strictly’s Amy Dowden shares health update after second mastectomy as she tunes into Celebrity Traitors from her hospital bed

Amy Dowden announced on Thursday that her second mastectomy surgery was successful and shared the positive news with her followers.

The Strictly Come Dancing professional received a breast cancer diagnosis in May 2023. Her treatment involved a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and fertility preservation, and she faced a life-threatening battle with sepsis.

She recently announced she was having a second mastectomy, and has now posted a photo from the hospital showing she was able to watch the finale of Celebrity Traitors after her surgery.

While recovering in the hospital, surrounded by her husband Ben and family, she wrote a message saying she was grateful for all the kind messages and support she’d received. She apologized for not responding sooner, explaining she had just checked her phone.

The surgery was successful, and I’ve been getting plenty of rest and recovery time. My husband and family have been taking great care of me, and my close friends have been bringing everything I need – we’re even managing to keep up our tradition of watching The Traitors!

Fans and friends flooded the comments section with support for the performer, including a message from dancer Dianne Buswell who wished her a speedy recovery and time to rest.

Claudia Winkleman and Ashley James added a series of love hearts.

People sent messages of support, wishing them love, healing, and a smooth recovery, hoping everything went well.

In February 2024, Amy shared that doctors hadn’t found any signs of the disease in her body. However, she explained that it would take five years to be fully confident and she would continue to need treatment.

On Monday, the dancer—the first contestant eliminated from this year’s Strictly Come Dancing with Thomas Skinner—revealed she would undergo another mastectomy.

As many of you know, I’ve always been honest about my health and medical treatment. I want to be upfront: what I’m about to share isn’t related to a new cancer diagnosis.

After talking with my doctors, we’ve decided I’ll have another mastectomy this week. They’re optimistic that my recovery will be smooth and uncomplicated.

Amy concluded: ‘Once I have healed I look forward to rejoining my Strictly family.

I’ll definitely miss being there in person, but I’ll be cheering everyone on from home! Thanks so much for all your support. With love, Amy.

Amy goes to the cancer center each month for a check-up and a shot as part of her treatment.

I was really heartbroken to hear Amy talk about how upset she is after leaving the show so early. She feels like she’s let down other people battling cancer, and it’s just so tough to see. She and Thomas were a lovely pair, and I was rooting for them, so it was a shock when they were the first to go. It’s clear she cares deeply, and it’s really affecting her.

She expressed her disappointment at being eliminated from the competition, explaining she was particularly eager to represent cancer survivors and felt she hadn’t lived up to their expectations. She shared these feelings at the Women of the Year Awards in London’s Royal Lancaster hotel.

I hoped Thomas would achieve great things, but if I’m honest, I also wanted to do it for everyone affected by cancer. My own battle with the disease meant I had to step back from the competition multiple times, and ultimately, I finished in last place.

In 2023, Amy received a breast cancer diagnosis, just months after marrying her husband, Benjamin Jones, who is also a dancer.

She received a clean bill of health early last year, but her first attempt at returning to Strictly Come Dancing, with JLS singer JB Gill as her partner, ended after six weeks because of a foot injury.

She explained that she wanted to demonstrate what life can be like after overcoming cancer.

I keep reminding myself that returning to Strictly and dancing again will demonstrate to everyone that you can still enjoy life, even after being diagnosed with cancer.
