Strictly scandal? They won a BAFTA! You won’t believe how!

On Sunday night, Dianne Buswell and Chris McCausland didn’t just win under a cloud of controversy, they also caused quite a stir by taking home the award for Best TV Moment at the TV BAFTAs.

Dance pro Buswell faced long odds in Strictly Come Dancing‘s Glitter Ball competition, as he was partnered with comedian McCausland, aged 47, who had lost his sight at 22 due to the genetic condition retinitis pigmentosa.

Dancer Buswell faced steep odds in winning Strictly Come Dancing’s Glitter Ball when he was partnered with comedian McCausland, aged 47, who lost his sight at 22 due to the genetic disorder retinitis pigmentosa.

However, their string of outstanding performances, consistently excellent scores, and McCausland’s unique self-deprecating humor led them to triumph over critics’ expectations and win the trophy in the final episode against JB Gill, Tasha Ghouri, and Sarah Hadland during series 22.

But a series of remarkable performances, consistently high scores, and McCausland’s self-effacing sense of humor resulted in them proving their critics wrong and winning the trophy by beating JB Gill, Tasha Ghouri, and Sarah Hadland in the series 22 finale.

On a packed night at London’s Royal Festival Hall last Sunday, the accomplishment garnered additional recognition with a TV BAFTA win – mere months after the Strictly Come Dancing series overcame a series of high-profile scandals.

The show was awarded the title of Best TV Moment for McCausland’s heartfelt “blackout” waltz, set to the song “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” which was choreographed to emphasize his vision impairment and mirror a performance by deaf contestant Rose Ayling-Ellis that took place in 2021.

In his absence, Buswell, aged 36, graciously collected and displayed the award, triumphantly, within the victor’s private space.

Earned the award exclusively by surpassing crucial moments from Bridgerton, Gavin & Stacey, Mr. Bates vs The Post Office, Rivals, and The Traitors in a significant manner.

On the red carpet earlier that evening, Australian dancer Buswell was joined by her longtime companion and ex-Strictly Come Dancing partner, Joe Sugg, before posing for photographs together.

In September, McCausland received praise from Strictly viewers as he dedicated a solo waltz to his hometown, Liverpool. After the performance, he humbly inquired of Buswell, “How did I do?

2024 marked an unusual chapter for me, as I stood by my favorite show amidst a storm of unwelcome allegations. Despite the turbulence starting with the much-loved dancer Giovanni Pernice being accused of backstage bullying in May, the show bravely pressed on with its 22nd series.

As a loyal devotee, I’d like to share that Pernice stepped away from the show and underwent an internal investigation following allegations made by his former celebrity partner, Amanda Abbington. These allegations suggested that she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder due to his intense training methods. However, later on, he was cleared of any wrongdoing in this matter.

According to a source, Gio believes that the attention on him has grown excessive, and he sees this as the ideal moment to embark on a new beginning.

He is planning to devote his attention to different television endeavors, as he believes he has accomplished everything he set out to on Strictly Come Dancing after winning the trophy in 2021 and making it to the finals an unusually high number of four times.

He continues to stand firm, insisting that he has not committed any wrongdoings beyond being a strict coach. However, he acknowledges that his training methods may not appeal to all, particularly in today’s more accommodating climate.

In a turn of unfortunate events, I found myself out of my position at the BBC, following allegations of abusive behavior – both physically and verbally – towards my celebrity dance partner, Zara McDermott. I regret to admit that I fell short in maintaining professional decorum during our partnership.

Reflecting on his leave from Strictly Come Dancing, Graziano expressed deep remorse in a subsequent Instagram post about the circumstances that resulted in his exit.

‘My intense passion and determination to win might have affected my training regime.

In accordance with the BBC’s personnel procedures, I feel it is appropriate for me to withdraw from the show. I’m disheartened that my perspective was not considered in the online news articles, and I understand the delicacy of this situation, taking all its nuances into account.

‘I have some additional details about this situation that I can’t share right now, but I want you all to know I’m standing firm for my loved ones. I hope only the best and continued success for the Strictly family in their future endeavors.’

On the evening of Sunday, as she received the award in McCausland’s name, Buswell expressed: ‘In just 1 minute and 30 seconds of that dance, it seemed to convey such a powerful narrative.’

‘A story of hope, determination, resilience and vulnerability.

‘This moment meant so much to the both of us, so I’m just so thrilled that we have this.’

With a humorous note from their past dance collaborations, she concluded by sharing this: “After 22 years in comedy, Chris surprisingly takes home a Bafta for dancing.
