Strictly favourite Chris McCausland admits he feels the most pressure to win from his 11-year-old daughter as he reveals last week 'wobbles' and emotional final dance

As an ardent fan and admirer of Chris McCausland, the blind Strictly contestant, I find myself deeply moved by his journey on this popular dance show. His fearless determination to step out of his comfort zone and embrace new challenges is nothing short of inspiring.

All of the Strictly finalists are desperate to lift the Glitterball trophy on Saturday evening.

As a lifestyle expert, I can share that when I embarked on this unique journey as the first-ever blind contestant, I felt an extraordinary sense of responsibility – primarily from my 11-year-old daughter, Sophie. She’s been my biggest cheerleader and source of motivation throughout this incredible experience.

Initially, when the comedian from Liverpool joined the dance competition, his daughter was apprehensive about his participation. However, much like the viewers at home, she soon warmed up to the idea.

Chris, aged 47, shared with Mail Online: “She would often tell me how proud she was of our accomplishments. Every Saturday, she’d say, ‘Don’t worry if you go out tonight, Daddy, because I believe you’ve already triumphed.’

Over the past 12 weeks, despite being blind, the TV personality has continued to garner impressive scores from the Strictly judges for his progressively complex dance routines.

But his success has now caused his daughter to revise her expectations.

Last week, Sophie told her father: ‘Daddy, do you know when I said it doesn’t matter? I’ve changed my mind. I think you can win this thing.’

On Saturday, the final show of the season, Chris along with his dancing companion, Diane Buswell, will perform three different dances: a display dance, their preferred selection, and a Waltz.

They found this past week quite emotional as they ready themselves to bid farewell to the program. In fact, the comedian was unable to hold back tears during a brief moment of vulnerability.

35-year-old Australian dancer Diane expressed: “Yesterday during rehearsals, Chris’s eyes seemed to glisten with tears. I asked him if he was okay. He replied that he had a vision this might be our final dance on Saturday night, which made him very sad. This news brought me to tears as well because we’ve invested so much time together over the past three months.

Chris commented: ‘Our final dance will be our rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” Waltz. This song is already quite moving, but the idea of concluding our dance and symbolizing the culmination of all we’ve achieved together, leaves me feeling emotional. I’ve been quite sentimental this entire week.’

This has been an extraordinary journey for me. It’s drained me physically, it’s terrified me beyond words, but let me tell you, it’s also been the most enriching experience I’ve encountered thus far. This adventure will undoubtedly shape my perspective on life and the world in ways that will endure.

He stated, “I can’t recall living a life prior to Strictly. It seems as if this is the only thing I’ve ever been engaged in.

In the race for the Strictly trophy, actress Sarah Hadland, JLS band member JB Gill, and reality television personality Tasha Ghouri are all contenders alongside Chris.

Chris shared that at the outset, his fear was overwhelmingly large, and he had declined the invitation for the popular BBC program before.

He expressed: ‘I refused this several times due to it being frightening. I’m not afraid of difficult tasks, in fact, I relish them. I enjoy a challenge, I appreciate novelty. I’ve ventured beyond my comfort zone, but I want to ensure that I can excel, make a positive impact, and uphold a good image, not just for myself, but for others as well.’

Initially, there was a significant uncertainty regarding that matter. The initial episode was incredibly frightening, and each subsequent episode has maintained an unsettling atmosphere, although the nature of the fear may have varied slightly from one week to another.

Although my anxiety levels have slightly decreased, it’s still something I’ve always dealt with. But now, I find myself tackling tasks that were once overwhelming, showing greater resilience and determination than I believed I possessed before.

Since their debut on the show, Chris and Diane have developed a unique connection that has earned them a strong fan base, positioning them as top contenders for the Glitterball Trophy. Moreover, Chris expressed high regard for his dance partnership.

I believe the person who made the decision understood their actions, as they seemed to realize Diane would be a great fit for me due to our shared humor, perspectives on life, similarities, and communication style. They must have known we would work well together, and I’m incredibly thankful for that intuition because we started strong from the beginning.

Chris joked that the pair sometimes had disagreements in rehearsals.

He said: ‘There’s been times where I’ve had to ask you to keep your mouth shut and I’d say, ‘I need some space between your voice and my face.” You can’t be in that intensive relationship between deadlines and not [need a break from each other].’

To maintain mutual respect, it might be beneficial to occasionally give each other some space, keep a friendly demeanor, and return later with a smile, as the work can be demanding, challenging, and filled with tight deadlines and stress.

Diane mentioned, “It’s been nice to feel like I’ve lightened your complaints a bit on occasion. We’ve certainly supported one another quite a bit throughout this experience.

On the weekend, the comedian is expecting fellow stand-up and friend Lee Mack to be present. During this time, he also expressed that his recent viewing of Strictly Come Dancing has given him a renewed admiration, as he hadn’t watched it before.

“I didn’t find it appealing. I hadn’t even considered watching it before. The first time I recognized the theme song was during episode one, so clearly I hadn’t been following the series.

I felt absolutely no personal attachment towards it, not at all. Others suggested that perhaps I ought to take a closer look at it.

‘I’ve grown to value its significance, impact, and personal importance. It’s the backing we receive and the engagement it generates from our home audience that truly stands out. People find solace, improve their moods, and face challenges in their lives through it – it serves as a source of comfort for some, much like football is for sports enthusiasts.’

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I wholeheartedly understand its value now, and I can relate. Frankly, I wouldn’t dream of dismissing football because it holds a special place for many, and I respect that deep connection. Similarly, there are other passions that matter deeply to individuals, and I recognize their importance in our lives.

‘Look after it for generations to come. I think that’s a perfect sentiment.’
